Darren Groves
With my soon to be fitted OD gearbox I would like to add a reverse lamp(s) to the Herald. Easy option would be to fit something like this on the rear valance: But I don't really like them. Or I could track down one from a Vitesse: But they seem fairly scarce and sell for quite a bit of money. Anyone out there done something a bit more imaginative? If so could you post a pic? Thanks. mishmosh
My Bond GT4s uses two lamps which I believe are identical to the early Herald sidelights. Nice and neat too.
Darren Groves
Do you have any pics of them fitted? I did think about fitting MGB reverse lights in the boot recess, but the badges on the right of the number plate make it a bit crowded to fit anything. To the left would be fine but then to have a single light would look a little odd.
mishmosh
Pics ? When i learn to post off an iphone ! Have a look on google images. It wasnt unusual to have a single on the nearside in the 70s. Been meaning to fit a reverse lamp on my 1200 since. 85 !

mishmosh
Have one of those somewhere. Was going to fit but lost the clear retaining clips !
Pete Lewis
no clips on these , took abit of finding ,and they had 21w bulbs not the dreaded festoon's used as they matched some indent in the paint from having some fitted in its previous life. mishmosh
I can see they are a little different to mine !
Darren Groves
For the moment I have fitted 2 flexible LED strips on the rear lenses on the central chrome strip, bought from Ebay for £1.99 including shipping. I have no idea if they will give out sufficient light, but for that price and as they just stick on can be taken off in minutes, there's no harm done. If you're not looking for them, then you really don't notice they are there.
PJM Stag
Have you managed to try these in the dark yet and do they throw out enough light?
Darren Groves
I've started to swap over gearboxes today, so will know soon if any good. I'll report back as soon as I know.

s.leah
Hi, sorry to but in I'm thinking of fitting reversing lamps too, but I'm not sure about switching. I have a 1968 Herald 16/30. Is it possible to simply fit a reversing light switch to the gear box? I read somewhere the thread may already be there and it's just a case of removing a plug and screwing in the switch, but I'm not sure that sounds right? Thanks Simon
Pete Lewis
Here, s hoping you have a 13/60 ?. early gearbox needed a extention to the remote with a cam and top mounted bracket later like the 13.60 may have as you describe a blanking plug under the remote housing its tunnel off to have a look see, if no plug then you need parts and bracket like shown on eg GT6 with overdrive of a seperate dash switch with a bright warning lamp, or buzzer pete
Eddie
Hi, I have a gearbox that I bought from eBay, that the seller said came from a Herald 13/60. It has a mechanical switch, fitted to the top of the gearbox housing, operated by the remote, which I assume is for a reversing light, I don't want the switch so am happy to sell to anyone who wants it. I can post a photo if anyone is interested.
Mike Crewes
Please remember that if you are fitting a seperate switch for reversing lamps that is not operated by the gear lever, it must also have a tell tale light on the dash. Many switches will light up, or operate a seperate light. Just a reminder. Mike

Darren Groves
Good option, there are some chrome finish ones as well: http://r.ebay.com/rgKgi1 I opted for these little 9w LED's, reasonably unobtrusive and very bright.

Clive
To fit the reverse light switch you will need not only the inhibitor switch and bracket, but very likely the end rod and small "arm" on the end. Or the whole remote would be easier......
Eddie
Here is a better picture of the switch still on the 'box. I tested it with a battery and spare light unit and it works! Once I had cleaned it up I was able to remove the operating "arm" from the remote rod, it was held in by a pin. Not sure if the rod normally has a hole in the end? Had to take the remote off to be able to drift the pin out. All removed and cleaned up a bit. The bracket and operating arm look home-made.The actual switch is a Lucas part. It has the number SS10 1 on it.
KevinR
It looks to me like someone has modified an Overdrive lock-out switch to work as a reverse light switch instead - clever !
