I believe most people fit into either of those categories and many in-between, depending what the subject matter is.

Some are brilliant in their specialist field but bl**dy useless in other things, many of which are a lot more useful or important.

I always remember my woodwork tutor saying "always keep you hands BEHIND the blade boy"...as I head for the box of sticking plasters

That's the way to get young people to learn things.

There's no substitute for practical experience 👍

Our woodwork teacher had 3 fingers missing, we never went near the blade.

How awful, you might be able to claim compensation for the stress and worry that must have caused you. Forcing young people to recognise that actions can lead to consequences is pretty much child abuse 🙄

Best not mention being hit on the head with a tea cup for talking in line, dodging thrown slippers/ plimsolls  and the kane. Being pulled along by my ear by the music teacher (one ear does stick out more than the other). Get home to have you older brother beat you up cos hes had a bad day at work. Happy days.

I am still glad I was a young person when I was instead of being one today 🤔

Back in the days when knife sharpeners used to come round the houses we had a local guy and as he sharpened the knives he sang: "Always cut away from yourself, never cut towards yourself, in case you cut yourself...."

I remember them with their little cart. Mum would send me out with a carving knife or two and the garden shears.

Things have changed a little here now. The local one has his market van and is on a local market each Wednesday and he comes along to our village evening markets that we have the first Saturday evening of each summer month.

Local produce, cheese, meat, snail, honey, veg etc. Plus as it is held in the car park by the village bistro and church he evening is spent enjoying a snack and a drink.

Sending a child out in the street with a carving knife 😱, you would have an armed response unit attend now 😒

Children don't go out into the street now they stay indoors glued to their current electronic device screen

it was joyous to see them all with skipping ropes, swings, and generally chasing each other.

Once they had caught them they were going to tie them up with the skipping ropes and hit them with the swings. All good harmless fun

Checking the bearing temperature of working rotating machinery, with the back of the hand?. Gear Changing Flat belting on the fly with a large spanner, or a piece of pipe?. Guarding? What`s that when it`s all there? The old Soya, Cocoa, Flour and similar mill`s where lethal places, for the unaware. For Years during and after Apprenticeship, and at sea. I carried a 7" open knife, as a tool. I still have it in the garage, stuck in a panel at the back of the Bench.
