Woody2000
Hi I have a 1973 triumph 2000 with a automatic gearbox when it’s in park no problems but when in drive or reverse with my foot on the brake it seems to be dragging and then the engine stalls any ideas what to do thanks
Pete Lewis
is this more engine idle settings are allowing a stall it should have a good creep when idling and takes a fair brake to hold it from creeping so is the idle failing or the drive is too powerful sorry chicken and egg problem Pete
Woody2000
To be honest Pete its drives ok but when I stop at any lights or junctions it gets slower and slower and sometimes stalls did mention this to a mate and he said it should idle the same in gear same as park so not sure really 😮 dont think it had any creep at all
Pete Lewis
if the engine is idling then in D you get some constant drive you must apply the brake to hold the car from creeping it sound like the idle mixture is too rich and when hot it just goes all wooly and dives into a rambling stall its not gear box its engine idle setting that need attention so have a look at carb jet settings and idle speeds yes putting into D should not drop the idle by much , maybe 50rpm this will make the car creep along and eg hold the car on light incline without stalling its engine setting that you need to examine is this on strombergs ??? first is what is the normal idle rpm you get when its ok ??? lean off the jet from under the carb till the idle improves if this speeds it up youre going the right way slow the idel back to a round 800 when its running happier timing also needs attention use 97+ fuel and as near to factory setting as possible without pinking Pete Pete
