a plastic tube would  be fine  anything really   dont block a breather unless you fit a breathing filler cap

cant see whats on mine without  de triiming the boot

the question is why is it leaking ???    its a breathe and   not  there to leak fuel  in any normal situation

The tank breather pipe on UK-spec cars is normally just routed from the highest point of the tank, up a bit then down and out through the boot floor. I don't remember details of the 2000 saloon but the principle is the same across the range. The idea is that any smells are kept at ground level where you don't notice them.

US market cars were subject to legislation that required an "evaporative loss control system", even from the late 1960s (all modern cars have to have them). This traps the vapours in a charcoal canister then purges them into the engine inlet manifold next time you drive it.

As Pete says, never seal it off because the tank needs to breathe.
