Hello,

I was on another forum (no not that one!)  Telecaster Guitar Forum (tdpri.com)  I needed to find the wiring for one of my guitars. You don't need to know that, except their forums are much like our own. How they can write reams and reams about a single guitar model from one manufacture, all divided down into sub forums, is.........impressive. Their lounge bar is the "Bad Dog Cafe" It should be Café but they're Americans.

However they have written down rules.

POSTING RULES THAT ALL MUST FOLLOW. PLEASE READ! | Telecaster Guitar Forum (tdpri.com)

COMMERCIAL RULES FOR THIS WEBSITE | Telecaster Guitar Forum (tdpri.com)

It's very comprehensive and a bit draconian, No swearing! But softens that with "no excessive swearing". And we don't need the gun lobby rules, but this could quickly be adjusted to suit us and stop a reoccurrence  of our recent unpleasantness

Excellent discovery Doug. All of it seems perfectly sensible. I particularly like this bit

The Moderators here are volunteers that serve to make the site better by keeping things under control. It's a thankless job. Many times they take abuse from those that they contact. They do not need to be second guessed by armchair mods that think they could do a better job.

I am a moderator of a famous British slot car brand and apart from the occasional gift of a car (which has dried up as they can't/won't ship to the EU at the moment) I get 0 feedback, praise, compliments... I only do it because no one else can/will...

Therefore I have a lot of time and understanding and sympathy for other mods!

I wouldn't say that, there have been a number of posts from various people, which in my view, step over various lines. Everybody has the same right to post on here, they just don't know the rules.

However, I notice we have no response from "The Top" so I think I will bring this up at the next AGM.

I too have been a moderator on another forum - generally a thankless task and usually the same offenders and affronted!

Our rules were pretty straightforward - no personal attacks, no swearing, no sexual content, no politics and no religion just about sums them up... Our biggest challenge was people who were friends and knew each other well, but would be deliberately antagonistic towards one another on the forum to see who could get another 'moderated'. As Mods, we knew what they were up to, but were governed by the outward appearance to those who didn't...

Personally, I take the view that I choose what I engage with online, whatever the platform is, and treat others as I would expect to be treated myself - generally seems to work! However, rules are an unfortunate necessity in this world.

Surely, It is rarely "one person". In that case the "Don`t feed the Troll" mantra should work.

Being ex M-N. there is a maritime site I go to from time to time. One "person" habitually posts potentially contentious stuff, and It is largely ignored?.

Yes please Doug. For the moment I have suggested to the moderators the Politics Topic be deleted.

Iain

I agree with Iain's comment as attached, that on a car club forum primarily for the members benefit re tech advice and general humorous banter there is NO place for politics of any persuasion be it for or against, one's politics are for personnel consumption only, no one else wants to know!

No, because allowing them to post racist or sexist opinions makes for a very unpleasant environment. We want to avoid that.

That's a fair sentiment but needs to be absolute to be of any benefit. Which means even comments like "new format adverts" (which turned out to be a highly political definition) would need to be banned. And how the "£$%^ are the moderators supposed to police that?

Most of the unpleasantness on this site could be removed in one go........ as it's mostly down to one person.

Then the answer is simple, just hover your mouse over the name of the offender and a box will appear with a button that allows you to ignore content from that user.

Doug, during a bout of insomnia I have just read through the rules. Most make sense, I like the "Agenda" section.

However, the more rules you have, especially as they get more specific, empowers the "difficult" posters as they think they are clever and claim they are not breaking rules.

For my money, flexible guidelines are better. So one could argue that Brexit is political, so nobody should mention it, despite it having caused all sorts of problems. That is just an example.

And of course, you sometimes get somebody turn up, as did here a few months ago, who seems to suddenly dominate the forum posting all sorts of drivel that is essentially harmless, breaks no rules, but annoys the hell out of everybody.

A team of mods, who deal with these people effectively, is key. All the better if they can bring people into line with a smile and easy going slap on te wrist, so the offender has the opportunity to "learn" without being offended. A great example was somebody who thought it funny to post a picture of a great big turd. Sadly I didn't deal with it, my response would have been "this has been reported as unfit for human consumption" or suchlike. However, another mod went on about it breaking forum guidelines and made it very heavy. Result was we lost a regular poster who was a decent bloke with, like most of us, the odd character flaw.

There is another issue with forums. Not exactly a problem. But probably 90% of post are made by a dozen or less people. Whose character then dominates the forum. Just something that people need to be aware of to make sure a few people are not steering the agenda.

Just my 2p worth. Moderating it tricky, and as far as I can remember I have never had a proper telling off. But I get the feeling Kevin is very good and fair with the way he does things. And in general this is a pretty decent place to be. The odd annoyance, but teh simple answer is to not feed the trolls. If all te above people posting (I think) about one individual actually clicked the ignore button the issue would be resolved. The old mantra "Never argue with idiots" springs to mind. I have openly pulled out of a couple of discussions recently. My life is better for it.

Rules, guidelines. All very tricky. This is a car forum so the vast majority of threads should be car related, drift is unavoidable and often informative.

I don't envy the moderators at all, bless them.

Yes there is stuff here that shouldn't be, but by and large I consider it part of the price to pay. Like where I live, our view out the house at the back is open and faces west, the price to pay is we get the full effect of storms and the 'nuisance' of the farmer in the 6 hectare field that gives the open view.

Good example, if I asked for help locating a part and someone suggested one of the UK suppliers would I be out of line by replying that since Brexit getting stuff from the UK is more complicated and can be massively expensive? Not political a statement of fact as a result of a political act.

As I said I don't envy the moderators

Some good points, but I think we would be on a firmer footing with basic guidelines, not least that moderators would be singing from the same song sheet.

And don't forget we already have Club Rules. These may be found under the "The Club" button on the front page, very general, but there is article 21 which I was once threatened with! :o

Very vague article but I guess would be a catch all to cover all types of 'inappropriate activity'
