Sandy Gibson
Hi Folks I bought the above engine and am presently re-building it as a spare. Don’t know anything about the history of the engine or the reg. no. of the car it was in. Was wondering if there was any way more information could be traced using the engine number on its own? As I bought it it had already been bored out to +030” and the crank to +010”. Thanks for any thoughts Sandy Gibson
Clive
Very very unlikely. What with GDPR etc, no official body will give you any contact details or what car it was originally fitted to. But there is not much to be found out after you have checked the number, the only tricky bit may be working out if it is the original camshaft. Otherwise it is all just measuring. Pete Lewis
sadly these numbers were not recorded in a traceable way as far as i recall it was recorded in the heritage certificate for a car but thats searched by reg and com numbers the engine number is coincidental you could ask at Gaydon but i dont think they can help Pete
dougbgt6
Sandy, Here is a useful site which suggests FD prefix is a USA Spitfire mk3 1296cc and HE suffix 9.0:1 Triumph Spitfire and GT6 Engine Numbers Doug
Sandy Gibson
Thanks Doug. Interesting but not sure about that one. I thought all Mk3 engines were FD prefix? My existing engine is FD and ending HE as well. Can’t believe two ex US engines have found their way to me!
Clive
UK mk3 are also FD. 9.0 1 CR sounds a little low? Thought UK ones were higher. Maybe aim for 9.5 or even a smidge higher, it will perk the engine up even with the std cam.
dougbgt6
O,K normally reliable, don't know why they would make that mistake/omission. Triumph Spitfire and GT6 Reference Pages Doug
Sandy Gibson
Perhaps the low compression version was for US market only?

PeteH
The US C:R was 8.5:1. From about 1969?. The US went to unleaded a lot earlier that the UK/Europe, and most Manufacturers reduced the C:R on their engines. Pete
