Mk 1 Vitesse Reg SYE 954F

BrianY

Recommended Posts

Hi I am a new member and acquired my car back in May 2020. The registration documents shows that the last owner was in London. Its a long shot but does anyone recognise the registration number. It is a Royal Blue code 56 Mk 1 Vitesse saloon. The person I purchased it from had brought it over from the London area quite a few years ago and  stored it intending to restore it. He did not re register it  and it would appear to have dropped of the DVA system as his ownership pre dated the SORN requirement so I was fortunate that I was able to retain what appears to be the original registration number here in Northern Ireland.  Currently I am restoring it with the aim of having it all together by late summer. Famous last words!!!  Any info would be most welcome.

I asked the same question about my 1968 Mk1 saloon back in August. No joy, but I was told to ask the 'Agreed Value' insurance team at the club. I did not follow it up because I have a stack of ownership history. You may like to give this a go. Good luck with it all.

That is an amazing photo amazing Colin. I don,t know where the number relates to , I had assumed London as that is where the car came from but it could have started life elsewhere. I will see what Google says about that reg.

Explain for the benefit of us colonials! I was looking up charts of UK registration numbers, so found that the local authority code 'S' was Edinburgh, and SY was Midlothian, but couldn't find a three-letter code. YE is London, but how does the year etc place an 'S' in front, or how is the emphasis on the last two letters rather than the first two? Our system was always different, just two letters right up until the 1970s, but I'm still trying to work out the mainland system.

My first car was AVC 257B.  This was the system introduced in 1963.  VC because it was registered in Coventry.  The letter A is just a random identifier as are the numbers.  The final B is the year identifier, A for '63, B for '64.  The letter changed on the 1st January but the trade complained that it distorted sales so it was changed in the year 'E'.

Just as in Derbyshire where I grew up the second 2 letters were RA with the first tending to be the area within the county. Around Chesterfield there were a heck of a lot of BRAs . .🤫

I`m sure years ago i researched my Vitesse reg. Starting PHT. Found to be a Bristol number, first owner in Wimbourne, Dorset, where my grandfather came from!.

Might check out my Herald, GJH.

Edit:just looked on here:

I hope Brian forgives us for hi-jacking his thread; happens all the time round here!

I suppose I should have remembered from Carlisle, where I always remember cars with 'AO' in the registration, and just a different first letter. Plus of course my own 1200 Herald which was registered in London from new, hence the H-YH numberplate.

Sorry Brian. Unfortunately what comes under the heading regularly doesn't feature in the heading. Happens a lot here. One of the things that makes this forum so good. So don't assume from the heading of a thread, that the contents won't be interesting to you, or even, for that matter, bear any relation to the heading. It will all be informative or humerous to someone, if only to the person posting the comment. I regularly check on posts that may have no interest to me according to the heading, only to find that it drifts into something very, very, interesting.

Does this get the record for the longest ( in metres of text) posting on a thread? Shouldn't have said that someone will post a complete workshop manual . . .

The listing does confirm that the number plate on my 13/60 read and the heritage certificate agree, Shrewsbury.

All you can tell from my French plate, DR-196-BL, is it is 2015 ( the DR bit), the year I imported it.

Well I certainly kicked of a discussion. No worries on my part about this but after all this it might be London or perhaps Scotland. I will go to the British Motor Museum and see what they say. Its not really important but it is nice to get the history if one can. I am just glad that I was able to recover the registration.  once again thanks for all your inputs.
