My car history...

Pimp my Vit

Recommended Posts

I always tried to get the best value out of cars over the years so rarely changed unless I had to. I've had some short-lived lemons, a Hyundai 4 x 4, Rover 75 Estate and a Clio none of which lasted more than six months with me, but otherwise I've kept cars for seven or eight years. I get comfortable in them!

only 10 personnel or family cars since 1963, of which 5 were Triumphs, BUT I had 30 company cars in 27 years, which were replaced at 45.000klm or 2 years, I averaged over 45,000klm/annum as an operations engineer for Melb Water. The first 17 years were Govt registered & number plated vehicles which got you into or park anywhere, before switching to private leased vehicles. when on leased vehicles my MD rang me after the Lease Co queried why I needed new tyres at 25,000klm, thought a moment then replied, Brian doesn't your son drive your car, I had to have words with junior, no more drag racing in the McDonalds car park!

All my work cars were specially fitted with upgraded brakes, LSD's, manual box's, special Roo bars, and engine/gearbox sump guards, for serious off road catchment & pipetrack driving. Management tried unsuccessfully to get me to select 4WD Rangies or T Cruisers, my response I ain't driving a truck, I was quite happy with Fairmont Ghia's or similar Aussie made luxury models, anyway SWMBO drove them too & no way would she drive a truck! If I was going deep into the catchments which could be over 100klm deep I would purloin a 4WD truck as some of those remote access and fire tracks were seriously rough! Our catchments are closed (water quality) ie the public don't have access driving or walking so you can really have a go!

I see you had an Austin Maxi, mine was Mk 1 with the cable system from gear-lever to gearbox. I don't think I ever had five gears and reverse at the same time, the garage would adjust these so I could get the missing one but that would mean losing one of the others. I think they changed to a lever system for the Mk 2. In my twenties I made full use of the fold down into a bed configuration of the seats!!!

You also had a IMP, on mine the engine would seize up when hot, you would just pull over to the side of the road let it cool down and away it would go again, Aluminium engine was the problem with rad in the front. Easiest car ever to get the engine out just remove the rear panel and push the car forward!!

amazing space in a Maxi  yes mine was a twin carb HL with rod change bit quick in its day

cant say the boing boing suspension suited towing very well

Never siezed an Imp biggest problem was over 7k in top broke all the speed limits took engines out on top of the ransoms mower as a cart

the Solara and 1501 were cracking tow cars worst the Fiat Tipo  turbo diesel fast but troublesome

the R25 went to the moon and back trouble free   the  405  was a nightmare of dealer cock ups

Ah Peugeot dealers, their catch phrase 'yeah mate they all do that"  I got that no matter what went wrong with my 405 sti or the later 605 sport (Basically Pug had a whole lot of manual gearbox 605s that executives didn't want because of the very fact they had a manual gearbox, so they put a body kit and boot spoiler on them, gave them a 'sport' button that did bugger all and flogged them as sports models) I knew my local dealer on first name terms!!!

I only had Peugeot's and Fiats as company cars as we had lots of OE business with them...
