Front seal speedi-sleeve

The front crank seal on my mk1 Vitesse has always weeped oil a bit even when the seal was brand new and recently has been leaving a few drips after a run so Ive installed an SKF speedi-sleeve. The metal spacer that the seal runs on didnt look worn but now the slight increase in diameter seems to have stopped any leakage (early days yet I know). It was part number CR99199 and tapped on to the sleeve with no problems and I actually left its tear off neck in place as it didnt interfere with anything. I pulled out the radiator to get access for crank pulley removal and also had to take off the timing chain cover as unfortunately the sleeve wouldnt pull out but all pretty straight forward really👍

Well done, Johny!    It's always good to make an effective repair!

But just think on't, there may be a cheaper and just as effective way.    A replacement spacer is £12 from Canley's, when the right Speedisleeve is about £20.      OK, it won't be a new spacer.

While talking about fitting the spacer, there are two ways to do that.

A/ Fit the spacer to the crank nose, then fit the timing cover.   The bevel on the spacer should face forwards.

B/ Fit the timing cover, then insert the spacer.    The bevel should face backwards.      This second method makes fitting the cover easier as the timing chain spring can be held back more easily.

True I was lucky to get a bargain sleeve on ebay but I think there are makes which will be cheaper than SKF. My spacer, which is original, has no discernible wear groove but with a brand new seal still wasnt dry so I like the idea of going slightly larger on diameter with the sleeve as even a new spacer might be no better...

Method B gets my vote as the spacer is pushed into the seal in the correct direction rather than against its lip.
