I bought it back after selling it a year after i bought it new 40 yrs ago! It has had a noise like the exhaust was touching the chassis. I tracked part of the noise to the rear box mountaed badly and have kept looking at the front bracket. Changing it to fit onto the gearbox makes perfect sense . Thank you. I thought the answer would be simple and it looks like an error the previous owner made after a rebuild. Has anyone got a picture on where on the gearbox the bracket fits?

Ah. I am using book pressures. That might be the answer.

Hi. Can i replace the front exhast bracket with a strap? I think the bracket is transmitting engine sounds throught the chassis. It seems strange to have what looks like a solid bracket attached to the chassis. Any advice?

Hi. Will incorrect shimming (chassis to suspension arms ) cause the steering to be heavy?
My spitfire is signficantly heavier to manouver from a standstill than my midget that has alloys fitted with larger tyres. Steering moves freely enough when jacked up and i have oiled the trunnions. Any advice or thoughts.

hi. I want to cut inspection plates at the end of each sill. Do you think that could cause an mot fail.. i mot it every year although its exempt.
Any views or mot testers out there.

hi. I want to route the temp sensor for a dual oil/water gauge and will fit it where the current temp gauge is fitted. I cant see an obvious route without making a hole in the bulkhead. Any suggestions?

Hi. I have a spitfire built in june 1978 and i bought and registered it in jan 1979. Then sold it in 1980. Is there anyway to know if the colour was the darker houndstooth or the later more pale colour. I think it was the darker colour and have set of both colours but my darker set has a tear in the drivers cushion.
So two questions . A/ Which is right for the colour? B/ has anyone got an old darker cushion or seat back i can use the repair my current cushion.
Thanks

Hi. I have bought the wix adapter and filter. Is the adapter easy to fit ?
I assume i do the normal oil change routine and remove the filter but what is the next step? I just want to get all the right tools to hand .
My adapter look as if it has two notches for a screw driver blade. Thanks

If i use a wix adapter do i need a special filter that has more clearance to cater for the nut ?
-
Hi again where is the oil feed when looking at the head with the cover missing .
-
I already have a spin on filter. Is that the same as a wix adapter/ non return valve.

Hi. My spitfire 1500 had an oil feed fitted to the cylider head rockers which i have removed .
Questions.
A/ Could that oiler have damaged the oil pump?
B/ At the moment if i start cold with no priming i get a very brief rattle that sounds like the mains and disappears on leter starts. Should i worry about this ?
C/ What oil pressure should i expect when i connect the mg type dual gauge , my midget 1275 shows about 60 psi cold and 40 psi hot but i have read on the web the spitfire runs at lower psi more like 25?
D/ will worn crankshaft thrust washers be audible or cause the rattle?
Thank you

Ok thanks for the advice .

An open question. I need an oil change and am looking at normal 20/50 but are there better modern oils that do the job better?

Hi. Its my Birthday soon and i wondered about fitting gas struts to the bonnet of my spitfire 1500. Do they really make opening the bonnet single handed? At the moment i have to start on the drivers side and then move to passenger side to free up the bonnet. Any views, i know its not standard but .....
Thanks Chris

Hi.
Has anyone used a body roller that fits to the wheels (as used on morris minor). I want to easily clean the bottom of the floor without crawling about on my back.
Thanks chris

Hi. I am replacing the carpets in my 1978 spitfire 1500. I originally bought in 1979 but cant recall if sound proofing was standard. I dont think it was but am I correct?
Thanks

I wonder if the sound is coming from the rear one. It looks to be original and maybe the rubber bushes has worn. I will try a strap there and see if it helps . I always like the exhaust being mounted with a bit of flex. It seems to rigid to me .
