I was looking through the original owners hand book the other day and noticed it was 50 years this week that my GT6 was first registered . By whites of Grimsby as I only Live in Lincoln its about forty miles , so why not find the house of the first owner . Whites went out of business in the 1990's and the hand book gives the address of the first owner , see photo below. any way got there and positioned the car and took a couple of photos , Then a car pulled into the drive so I thought i had better approach and say why I was taking photos of a classic car out side his house. Turned out the current occupier had bought the property six years ago from the estate of my GT6's first owner.

Hi Peter
A bit drastic but a solution . I have adjusted the bonnet cone for now and will see if that works . if not then I will get the Dremel to the catches. I probably will not know for a few weeks as it happened to and from Cadwell Park on Lincolnshire's back roads which looked to have been repaired by a chimp with a shovel and i was travelling at a brisk pace

On rough Roads the drivers side bonnet catch has started popping open GT6 Mk 3. Is this because the latch on the body needs to have more tension or less on the bonnet catch . all the parts show no sign of wear and were new when i rebuilt the car . I think i probably need to adjust the drivers side bonnet cone maybe wind it down a couple of threads to allow for wear do you agree

I think this is what you need buy quality and buy once . I initially put a cheap new spring on the GT6 . and had problems bought a replacement from a reputable supplier I suspect it came for these people

I use kill rust and found by accident that if welding a new panel to an old one with minor rust the kill rust gives a much better weld

Hi John
they shimmed back radius arms and removed the shims on the front wish bones which as far as i know were factory fitted They didn't give me a printout but set up camber and tracking etc. according to the spitfire 1500 workshop manual I gave them as mine is a late non roto flex

The tyres are 175/70/13 but i do have genuine MInilites which i got from the club shop a few years ago and they are either 5 1/2 or 6 J. Hi Nigel yes i think my drop links are the Classic driving development ones as well

I have not been happy with the handling of my GT6 for a while as it got a bit vague at motorway speeds. I was going to have a go last year but a snapped Achilles tendon put pay to that. However this winter and with advice from forum members. I set to, first I striped the front suspension and fitted better wish bones with blue poly bushes, I also noticed the rubber was starting to perish on the track rods and the anti role bar drop links, the track rod had no play but were replaced with greaseable ones and the drop links were replaced with the uprate double ball joint type. Next, as I had on the shelf a complete set of new vertical links genuine Stanpart trunnions and upper ball joints, they went along with new stub axles and wheel bearings. The Pirelli P3000 tyres were 14 years old and were not showing any signs of age but members here have recommended the Uniroyal rain expert 3's, so on went a set. The car is already fitted with uprated front springs, a rear leaf spring from Jigsaw Racing, and Gaz shocks, so no need to look at those. I also got a spitfire front spoiler and bolted that on.
The first drive was promising with the front feeling nice and tight but this did highlight the slight vagueness of the back of the car . So four wheel alignment went on the to do list. I have a couple of mechanic mates who recommend the Old Forge Garage next to Rimmers who have all the laser alignment equipment. I spoke to them and booked it in, once they had measured their ramp to make sure my car would fit, it did just, as they usually work on Land Rover and Range Rover. The track of the GT6 is quite a bit narrower than those. After checking and adjustment, I picked it up and the rear is now as good as the front. The GT6 now handles as it should in my opinion. I think the biggest single improvement are the uprated drop links but its difficult to single out any one thing as all the changes were made at the same time. I would just like to thank every one for there input over quite a while and yes the Uniroyal's are a great tyre for my driving style

Hi Ed
That's interesting, but a bit more work than I want to do and the foam should be reusable, one of the few advantages of having a colder climate the foam doesn't deteriorate as badly as warmer climates. Whish the same could be said for body work other wise I wouldn't have spent 3 years doing mine a while back.

Thanks for the advice Chris just looking at options am in two minds about originality or improving the spec and durability , Having said that the factory spec has lasted 50 years so cant be to bad

I Had a very late spitfire 1500 (approximately 400 from end of production) which was factory fitted with 5j wheels. I owned it for 25 years and it had 21000 miles when I bought just after its first MOT

A bit late but sorted the bonnet catch issue. When i looked closely the rubber cones on the bonnet were badly distorted bought a new pair of polyurethane ones, when fitted and adjusted that sorted the bonnet catch springing up
