  1. Here's a strange one, trying to adjust stronberg twin carbs, and had to remove breather pipes to gain access to thottle linkage. Noticed an immediate change in engine speed slowing and stalling engine. reconnected and ok again. To check undid Rocker Cover cap and again the engine stopped. Never heard of anything like that before. Any ideas ?
  2. Black plates and no Chrome bumpers....nice look
  3. And make sure that the rotor arm that sits on top of the shaft is correct , I had a Delco Remy Rotor arm sitting on a Lucas dizzy and it took me AGES to work out why the timing was 180 degrees out. The rotor arm fitted perfectly but its design meant that the "blade" and the driving " notch" were both on the same side whereas on the Lucas they are opposite. Mechanic AND detective to solve that one !!
  4. unfortunately there is no access to " the holes" without taking off carbs and inlet manifold, just ordering new studs and gaskets from Rimmer bros and have begun the tedious task of removing carbs ( fitted with heat shields that restrict access to their bolts too) Oh the fun of it, just unbolting stuff , taking it off, putting it back on, 🤪 then tightening it up again, a mechanics life !
  5. thank you for all the info. Seems like I will have to remove inlet and exhaust manifolds in order to gain access to the stud holes. Just to complicate matters I searched all the spares that came with car , including a large box of nut and bolts of assorted sizes and threads ( certainly not all from this car) and found 3/8" stud with UNC one end and UNC the other so if this is a missing stud ,the holes in the head might actually be UNC. Life is never simple. Thanks again Royston
  6. Sorry , but while I'm attempting to understand Bolt dimensions, could I also ask about spanner sizes too, does a 9/16" spanner relate to a 9/16" bolt ? The bolts on the end of the exhaust manifold are definitely undone with a 9/16" spanner , and their thread seems to be UNF,
  7. I presume all bolts on the Triumph are UNF thread ?
  8. I've poked a wire down the hole and I think they are just missing !
  9. Exhaust manifold GT6 mk3 is missing some fixings ! anyone know what they are please, bolts or studs, and size too would be good. thanks in advance if you can advise. cheers Royston
  10. Thank you all so much for all the ideas and advice, I've been playing with classic cars all my life and thought I understood the insides of a distributer, but somehow I've got confused about advance, retard , and which of these is before TDC and yes the crankshaft timing markings are well away from where they should be too. Pete's comments made me realise that the small anticlockwise adjustments I was making were in the wrong direction and a large move back clockwise , despite bringing the dizzy vacuum pipe virtually touching the engine, and the timing marks viewed with the Strobe disappearing into the distance, have made a massive improvement in power. Top banana also made me stop playing and be more organised , so thanks for that. Had to stop for the day with family visits and will carry on tmrw. Perhaps the rev limit still is there , but the pulling power greatly improved, it's beginning to feel like a real sports car at last. engine hasn't run for years, the carb are CD150, new diaphragms and ultrasound clean, with new float chamber inlet valves, needles not adjusted as no tool for it, ...it seems to me that hopefully, timing is likely to solve the issue cheers to all. Royston
  11. I've also checked on the Lumenition website and agree that I can't blame it on the optronics ! Back to timing and carb adjustments 😕 I'll try the " advance till pinking" method , I'm also wondering if dizzy is not doing its stuff with centrifugal or vacuum advance so will check that out this morning too.
  12. Thanks Guys, barely time to peel the potatoes before responses ! At 4000revs it runs fine just won't go past it, the electronic ignition may well be the limiter, it is an old Lumenition one , taken off a Dellow ( ford sidevalve) so no manual but could well be stopping further increase. I've checked butterflies and they are both horizontal on fulldepression of pedal. Royston
  13. Hi all, First post for me ! I'm proud new owner of a lovely Powder blue GT6, it has not been on the road for at least 6 years and I have set about returning it to good health. I have spent the last month rewiring as previous owner had begun to dismantle the loom and add extra equipment ( including power steering) and the original 3 fuses were just not enough ! I've also stripped and rebuilt the twin Stromberg carbs , fitted electronic ignition, dismantled and adjusted brakes, etc etc and at the end of my first month of ownership have at last driven the car.... what great fun too. Played around a lot with timing and carb adjustments and had a bad spell of backfiring and very little power and although I'm getting closer I still cannot get the engine to run past the 4000 rev mark, even when stationary, despite the rev counter going up to red line at 7000. I'm not intending to race the car, but even in overdrive my max speed is in the low 50's . Am I expecting too much ? or can the wealth of experts here offer some advice ? I have also spent MANY happy hours reading the Forum content, and gaining tips from past posts but can't find anything relevant so would be pleased to hear of your thoughts. ( and should I get some age related Black and silver aluminium pressed plates do you recon ?) Cheers Royston
