The seam cover should be DIY-able (two strips of steel, tack either side of the seam, weld the corner, careful grinding / dressing). Don’t expect you'd be able to salvage that part from a donor. How bad is the roof?

Worth asking the usual suspect breakers (Spitfire Graveyard, Spitbitz) for a donor, even if they’ve only got a section less bad than yours it might help.

Yeah, I'd considered that. The roof isn't too bad and I could probably get away with localised repairs. Its more where it transitions to the rainwater gutter at the top of the A Post/window screen frame. Full to the brim of bodge and no doubt hides a mess when I get around to grinding it off.

  2. Hello all,

Hopefully this won't have everyone rolling about laughing but is there anywhere you can still get hold of the front roof repair panels and seam cover panel, or has anyone got a cut or an old shell to cut from?

    Regards~

    Colin thanks for the recommendation. The actual number we use for these is;

    https://www.canleyclassics.com/?diagram=triumph-spitfire-mkiv/1500-mkiv-oil-cooler&ptno=715863/4

However ignore the advertised price for the time being until the next website update. Good news though as I've just reviewed the price, and unusually in this day and age I've actually reduced it to  £32.29 inc VAT for the pair.

Thanks for the info, I've just ordered a pair from Canleys.

    Regards~

Oh, yes. Didn’t know that came separately. Never mind then!

To be honest, my experience of those inner B panel to outer sill transition panels are absolutely useless and a country mile out fit wise. I ended up buying a inner B Post/striker panel and cutting off what I needed for the transition. Much better fit.

All b post related repair sections I bought when working on my Spitfire were poor in various ways… If you post a photo of exactly which bit you’re talking about I can probably give you some suggestions about making a section yourself.

Thanks Josef, its the bottom of the outer B post, the point at which it meets the outer sill. I've since purchase the full outer B post panel, I intend to just cut off the bottom 150mm or so to replace the rotten transition section.

    ^ great photo Doug :D

My TR4A has a wooden rimmed steering wheel, but having driven others I think it is much the same dimensions as standard. . .

Outside diameter is a tad shy of 15" (around about 14-7/8 to 15/16") and as you can see in the second photo the rim is about 3/4".

I wouldn't want much less diameter for car-park manoeuvring running on 28psi tyre pressures and 165/80-15 tyres.  Harder pressure is lighter but you feel it in the car's ride. I've set my car's steering geometry to be responsive. I wouldn't want it any more so. Indeed I'll soon be checking and readjusting it.. to lessen the car's presently slight vagueness at motorways speeds.

Do bear in mind, when you try a different sizes of steering wheel ; your reach to the column switches as well as visibility to both major and minor gauges.   I'm 6'-5" and a little too broad for a TR4 but the diameter of this size of steering wheel and it's relatively shallow dish are not a problem for me either when driving or when getting in and out. Mind you I have discarded the H-frame so i have more room for my knee over the gearbox cover.  I did modify the rear wheel arches to move the seats much further back, so my legs are straighter than with the standard geometry, and I'm now sitting in leather TR6 (tilt backrest) seats with good diaphragms and foam. They offer better under-thigh support (are higher in the squab) than the Mazda Mx5 seats I had until recently.

    Hope that helps.   Pete

    Thanks.

  7. Good morning, I recently bought one for my GT6 Mk3 project, I think it might have been made for a John Dere Tractor, its a country mile away from fitting my GT6 that's for sure. I appreciate that reproduction panels quite often need work but this would need cutting in four and piecing in to give it any chance.

Has anyone purchased a panel that is somewhere close or could recommend a supplier?

    Regards~

  8. Hello everyone, I have what I think is a TR steering wheel, that will eventually go into my Mk3 GT6. Looking at pictures of GT6 Mk3 steering wheels, the diameter of the outer ring (the part you hold) looks greater/thicker than the wheel I have. Would one of you kind people mind measuring the diameter of outer ring/the part you hold and let me know what it measures.

    Regards~

    Kevin,

You may also have wear in the spiral gear that drives the wipers. Pete Lewis showed me a trick with this, the gear only wears on one side so turn it upside down to the unworn side. The arms will then travel further and take up the gap.

I got new stainless arms from the Club Shop, rubbers were fine, but they have a non-stainless rivet right in the middle. The orange dot tells me it's time to clean.

    Doug

What a simple but fantastic fix.
