  1. Car is a 1971 Herald with 53,500 miles on the clock. Just noticed that the front left tyre is showing clear wear on on the outer edge whilst the front right is showing very little. Please refer to attached pictures. The mileage for the tyres is 6,500. With the car off the ground no movement can be felt in the suspension. No sign of “feathering” on either tyre Does this indicate that the camber on the front left is wrong or could it be something else? Thanks Dave
  2. Thanks for the responses. All suppliers I previously checked, including Rimmers (with whom I am not a fan after a previous bad experience!) were out of stock. Didn't think of Pilkington and have sent of an inquiry to them. Dave
  3. My windscreen has very fine crazing throughout. Last week a low sun left me blinded just as turned onto a round-about, giving me a real scare. Am I correct in believing the grazing to be within the windscreen "layers" and that the only solution is to replace the screen? If so, where please can I obtain a replacement? I've searched on the net and am unable to find one. Thanks Dave G
  4. Took carburettor off and thoroughly cleaned everything. All well until connecting the throttle cable and due to the inner cable splaying at the end it was near impossible to connect up without omitting some of the inner strands. The last time I ended up fitting a new cable. Does anyone produce a cable where this splaying doesn't occur or is there a trick. I thought on using an electrical connector which would have a bigger hole. I know the carbs are different but will the accelerator cable for a 1200 fit my 1360? Thanks, Dave
  5. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to respond and for the very informative and useful info. Dave
  6. Thanks for the replies. I have the standard single carb (not sure about spelling carburettor!) "Adjusting the mixture nut slightly" - a quarter turn at a time? I'll give in and take the carb off, give it a good clean and check the gaskets. Carb was fully overhauled a couple of years ago but I better obtain a new gasket set as some are tear - any supplier not recommended. No! I'll rephrase that to "any supplier recommended" Dave
  7. Thanks Pete Filter looks ok but I'll replace it. "Turn the jet adjuster to give the best running". Define best running please. Ta Dave
  8. Thanks trigolf. I'm pretty sure that mine were easier to oil when the car was not jacked up. I'm confused. (my age perhaps!!) Could my trunions somehow have been wrongly fitted? Dave
  9. Herald 1360 Carb mixture set and checked using colortune but spark plug colour is black suggesting a rich mixture. Plugs are NGK BP6E.. Which should I trust? Note that car is seldom used for short journeys. Thanks, Dave
  10. The lubrication chart in my Herald Haynes manual states on the Lubrication Chart (page 11):- "Jack front wheels clear of ground before lubricating" This instruction is not re-stated in the routine maintenance in the Suspension Dampers and Steering section (Chapter 11 para 2; page 171). As it takes considerable pressure to lubricate with the wheels of the ground is the instruction to lubricate with the wheel jacked up correct or necessary? Thanks, Dave
  11. Thanks to all. I'll leave it until we have some warmer weather. Dave
  12. Thanks Andy I have tried heating it up by leaving a fan heater running (safely) in the car whilst the hood was up for a couple of hours but it didn't ease it. Dave
  13. You are of course quite correct Clive but the hood does overlap the windscreen slightly. I had not appreciated that the webbing could be undone at the back. I'll have a look. Ta Dave
  14. Thanks Derek. It seems to me that its the webbing which is causing the problem.
  15. Hi the hood on my Herald convertible is very difficult to attach to the windscreen top rail as its too tight. Would it be practical to pack out slightly the fitting on the top of the windscreen header rail thus reducing the closing distance. Thanks Dave
  16. Thanks for all the replies. The scratches are not from the wiper blades its all over. Ill try the scratch removal kit. Dave
  17. Windscreen is covered in crazing which caused me yesterday to be dangerously blinded by a low sun. Could the crazing be within the laminate or would they polish out? Thanks Dave

    going electric

Article on vintage cars "going electric". Only $30,000 + for a VW beetle!
  19. A wee update on my second gear problem. Fitted re-bushing kit to the remote gear lever and (I don't understand how!) but after some short drives the problem has not reappeared. Dave
  20. Thank you. The help is much appreciated. Dave
  21. Took off the rear brake drums and there was no grease behind it. However grease had found a route from around the edges of the hub retaining nut/ washer. Dave
  22. I don't see how I can actually measure the "end float" -even if I new what it was. Would in translate to a "wobble" figure perhaps at the tyre edges? Dave
  23. Just finished cleaning and re-greasing the the front roller bearings and have a couple of questions please. 1. I've only done the outer bearings. Should I also do the inner ones? 2. Should I fill up the grease cap with grease before putting it on? Thanks, Dave
