  1. if the front carb is over rich ,

    then

    temperature compensator is troubling

the choke is passing excess fuel

    the diaphragm is split

the float needle is blocked or not seating

there are no ) rings in the jet body to leach fuel out

float  fitted upside down ( yes  possible  if it has two float arms )

if you remove the piston the fuel should be a few mm visible below the jet orifice

air cleaner blocking the front face ports

    and then head scratching starts

come to duxford in a modern its allowed , bring a copy of the advert ( if you ask nice theres some in the kiosk )

I will be at Duxford in a modern.  I have now received my Membership pack from Angie but my newspaper subscription allows me two people for the price of one entry to IWM museums so I might take advantage of that and enter with Joe Public.

  2. Many thanks to everyone for the various suggestions which we are currently working through.  Tony is working late in an effort to get the suspension and carbs in at least a state safe enough to take the car to Duxford.

Unfortunately not to be, GT6 still with suspension partially stripped out and CDSE carbs awaiting attention to stop the over-rich mixture to cylinders 1 to 3.

  3. thin its time you took a tootle over to sunny Luton

and i can show you all the things you need to know

temp compensators are best fitted with new O rings (2) and adjust to be firmly shut ,  thtas not correct but if you want to adjust mixture at normal temperatures they must be shut , any air bleed will upset any mixture adjustments at idle  just screw the small nut under the plastic cover till the plunger is firmly seated , refit and forget it .its an emmission device to lean off when hot. if its open when it should be closed you will never get its idle mixture correct .

you need to pop over for a cuppa and some clues  some time soon

    Pete

Thanks Pete.  The GT6 is with my friendly professional mechanic, Tony, who owned and rebuilt an early Vitesse over many years.  Unfortunately he has no experience of the later emission control carbs so I am trying to find answers and source parts for him to fit.  My previous hands-on experience with classics has largely been with MG's from 1932 to 1980, I am now getting too old to do my own spannering so rely on Tony.

  4. Thanks Pete,

On left turns, the nearside wheel fouls on the slightest lock and it has got worse in the few miles I have driven it, as if the ride height is settling.  That side has the slotted wishbone which is being replaced.  Looking at the offside there is the slightest mark on the bulkhead to suggest it has been lightly touched by the tyre at some point.

As far as I can tell the springs are plain black.

  5. I have recently bought a GT6 Mk3 (1971).  It appears to be fitted with the age appropriate CDSE carbs and the 311749 early Mk3 inlet manifold but the engine has been replaced  with a later engine, KE21904HE, and the crankcase breather valve is no longer fitted.

With ignition timing, tappets and plug gaps all set correctly, the engine runs with the front three cylinders  far too rich, while the back three cylinders are running at the correct mixture.  Can the mixture be made more lean on the front carburetter or is there something possibly wrong with the temperature compensator or throttle by-pass, please  ?  The Insulator and gaskets between carb and manifold have an internal slot , presumably part of the throttle by pass, which the gasket does not appear to fully seal from atmosphere, is this correct ?

I have no experience of Strombergs, would fitting an earlier CD set without emissions control be possible and make life easier, or even an SU conversion ?

If I have to have the carbs reconditioned, is there a recommended firm to contact ?

    All suggestions gratefully received.

  6. I have just bought a "restored" GT6 Mk3 and am finding some horrors like greased trunnions, "slotted" wishbone holes and front tyres fouling the bulkhead on lock - all despite an advisory free MOT cert.  I have no previous experience of Triumph foibles and desperately need guidance from those with the knowledge.

The car is on 175/70R13 Tyres, in what combination of circumstances could these foul the bulkhead ?  The road wheels look to be standard with no spacers but are not marked  as 4.5J.  The coil springs appear to be new but as I have no build history I do not know if they are standard height or lowered versions.

Could spacers or collets have been omitted from the coil spring/shocker assemblies when they were rebuilt ?

Any suggestions will be avidly pursued.

  7. Hi, I am Nick and have just bought a 1971 GT6 Mk3.

This is the first Triumph I have owned in 50 years and so my knowledge of Triumph and the GT6 is absolutely minimal.  I am now accumulating a string of questions to ask the experts.  Please bear with a Newbie if the questions have been answered many times before.

I understand that there is a monthly club meet at The Crown, Shillington, so I hope to meet a few of you there.
