  1. Hi all.

ive just been cleaning up my front and rear screens and removing the old gunk from the edges.  The rear one is ok but the front has a chip right in front of the driver.

Are these available new these days ?  I might prefer both but would definitely want the front.  If there’s a choice, any recommend suppliers ?

    Thanks a lot.

  2. Haha. Yes this is indeed how Aldi and Costco as another example, make their money - not from what you needed to buy, but from what you didn’t need to buy !  And yes, there is a group to provide counselling and support - it’s got a strange name - The Triumph Sports Six Club !

  3. Yes I bought a big square planter tray from Dobbies Garden Centre which I found to be better since it doesn’t have to be too accurately centred under the car to catch the assorted drips !

Interestingly, I found that Machine Mart parts cleaner fluid is excellent for cleaning these drip trays out occasionally.  Think it’s just mainly a very strong detergent, which is ideal.  Left the drip tray completely oil-free.

  4. Not really a crisis, but I was finally getting around to cleaning up all my GT6 glass and frames now that the car is truly in bits.

All now looking pretty sharp but I discovered the top hinge on the driver’s side quarterlight is broken.  I’ve removed the quarterlight pane but the hinge doesn’t look like it can be replaced on its own

Does anyone know where I might get a driver’s side 1972 GT6 Mk 3 one of these ?

    Thanks guys.

  5. Hi all. Haven’t been on for a while !

I’ve had to open up my passenger door on my Stag to get a minor dent fixed, and I cannot remember where I got the excellent moisture resistant lining sheet which I put under the interior trim panel. I think it was to keep damp off the panel, and I don’t recall whether I had to glue it or whether it was self adhesive, which I think it was. Does anyone know what stuff I’m talking about ?  It’s sort of white translucent material.

    Thanks as always

    Richard

  6. Successfully recovered this old girl from remote storage this morning.  Started first turn and only had to blow up three soft tyres.

The GT6 is in so many bits that it is about 70% off my premises for the next couple of months !  Have to grapple with garaging thereafter.

    Hi All,

Canley Classics have announced that they no longer stock, or will sell their CV drive shaft conversion, as the minimum order quantity required from their supplier would make it uneconomical etc. Having saved my pennies I was about to place an order before Xmas, when I read their announcement, which was a big disappointment !

I then noticed that Rimmer Bros sold an alternative solution, but broadly similar to Canleys' design - i.e. you still have to shim the bearings to achieve the correct end float. Jigsaw Racing also sell what I believe is exactly the same design, when comparing the pics. Not wishing to 'miss the boat' a second time I have ordered the Rimmer product, which appears to be well made and slightly more expensive than the Canley item. Does anyone have recent experience of fitting the Rimmer/Jigsaw product ?  Before I consider starting the project, I'm particularly interested in any problems encountered during/after the job. BTW I'm fully conversant with the end float shimming process, having replaced the bearings some years ago.

I’m doing exactly the same with the Jigsaw one. I would appreciate a quick summary of the end float measurement and shimming process which I regret I know nothing about. What is it and how do you go about it ?  Thanks for any help as always. Richard

  8. Had an “interesting” day today removing my coil springs from the front struts.

I had two types of compressors - an old pair of “single jaw” Draper ones (picture 1), and a new pair of “double jaw” Drapers I bought last week from Amazon (picture 2)

The double jaw ones didn’t really fit well due to their radius of curve not suiting the GT6 springs - I pressed on undaunted.......Lesson 1 - if they don’t fit TOTALLY snugly, abandon the project

One of them then detached itself under pressure and flew smartly across my workshop - happily in a northerly direction while I was standing to the West.......lesson 2 - keep the released strut inside the spring to avoid a bowing explosion, and don’t stand in line with the resultant end point !

The said compressor came to rest in my stock of Diet Coke, inflicting an impressive wound on one can......I was suddenly aware that this could have been my stomach, kidney, eye or other vital organ - see picture 3  lesson 3 - wear protective gear !

All’s well, and I was uninjured and a bit older and wiser.  The two-jaw compressors also both suffered stripping of their screw threads bizarrely, which could again have been dangerous, and are on their way to Amazon for a refund.  Really poor quality.

I've never needed one on my non-rotoflex Spitfire and the springs been in and out a number of times.  Getting the spring and lowering block both in place and all the holes lined up through to the diff. is the hard part!

Yes it is rotoflex - see earlier post.

Owen at Park Lane was quite ill last year and was catching up with orders through last Autumn / early Winter. Best to phone him - I seem to recall on the couple of occasions I've bought from him (excellent quality both times) he was much more responsive by phone.

    Gully

Thanks Gully.  He was great on a call before Christmas and we had plans for him to do a load of stuff.  He never followed it up by email as he promised however, and hasn’t been returning calls recently. Frustrating.

    Richard,

Can offer my strongest recommendation for Mark Field at Jigsaw.  They may be slightly more expensive but if Mark uses those pieces that is good enough for me and he was a ready fount of knowledge and support when I hit the odd snag rebuilding my GT6, with rapid responses to EMails.

    Dick

Thanks Dick. He comes across as very knowledgable. Have you used his cv conversion kit ?
