I can remember having issues when I fitted a new Sender Unit and Seal on my Vitesse tank during it's rebuild.

I think I had to tweak slightly inwards carefully with a hammer and a block of wood the 3 retaining lugs on the circular tank opening so the lock ring was a tighter fit.

I wasn't convinced it would seal at first but it worked and held the contents of a full tank in place

I'm sure the new seal I got was rubber though which may have helped, it wasn't the fibre/gasket material type

(I much prefer the earlier type with the 6 screws)

    Can you post any photo's?

  2. I had a similar problem with the MGF Seats in my convertible.

I'm 5' 8" tall and just about had enough room when they were set fully back

An option is to sell on your MGF Seats and fit MX5 Seats which will clear the 'B' Post and give you more rearward travel as they are narrower at the top, I believe they recline too.

PS - Here's an image I've borrowed off this site of MX5 Seats in a Herald Convertible

  3. I did this job during lockdown, I used 2 x 750ML cans of Dynax S50 and also 2 x 500ML of Dinitrol 3125 Aerosol I already had, this was for a Sunbeam Tiger though which probably has a lot more cavities and box sections than a Small chassis Triumph.

I drilled additional holes for application/drainage as advised by the owners club, shake the cans well and warming them in warm/hot water seemed to help with better application.

Be warned, it is a very messy job!!

I didn't have access to a ramp, so had to jack the car as high as possible on Axle sands, I wore disposable paper overalls, goggles and a mask

If doing the job inside your garage put something down to soak up the inevitable spillage that will come out of the drain holes and keep a door or window open for a bit of ventilation

    Good luck

  4. Congratulations!

It looks to have been restored to a good standard with a lot of sensible upgrades.

Looking at the write up, don't forget to oil those Trunnions with EP90 Gear oil before you go out in the car and get the tracking checked and adjusted

Also, be sure to check for any loose bolts on the Suspension/Steering and an Oil and filter change after 500 miles, with a re-torque of the cylinder head would be prudent too

    Good luck and Enjoy.

  5. I had this recommended for use in my Current Classic by the previous owner

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjD2orxh-D8AhVTgVwKHQtnBkIQFnoECCUQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.millersoils-shop.co.uk%2Fvspe-power-plus-one-shot&usg=AOvVaw3sKlXJuGB-PNQsyyedpbhd

I have no idea if it works, but it states it contains a lead replacement additive, Octane Booster and also helps protects against the effects of Ethanol.

If your not sure and for piece of mind give it a try.

Yes, The Ivor Searle option is a bit cheaper as you get the complete Engine.

I purchased a brand new Crankshaft off Fitchett's when I rebuilt the Engine in my Vitesse, I reckon I spent over £1,000 on parts even back then in 2004 and I already had Gasket Sets, seals and Camshaft/Followers, add in the Machining costs if rebores/re-grinds are needed and it will get more expensive?

So the Ivor Searle option looks reasonable value?

    Hi Gary,

Yes! Those tiny rear chrome strips. The card's allright for the mo' (even 50 years in . . . ) !

D'you think Newton can/would supply the strips only (any knowledge)??

    Best, C.

    Colin

I had a complete re-retrim kit off them for my Vitesse and from memory the strips aren't actually chrome, they are a Chrome effect moulding that is pressed or crimped into place on the edge of the Footwell trim panel.

I suspect it will be on a roll and they may be able to sell you a couple of metres of it, for a small fee if you give them a call?

Yes, but not at that price... and not from that supplier. The last one I got was woeful. I deal with them for other things but their apprentice must have been in charge the day my 1200 valence was made.

I had a front valance off Fitchets for my Vitesse back in around 2003, I wasn't particularly impressed with it, it wasn't as bad as yours but needed a bit of fettling to fit correctly (presumably the original press tool is quite worn now?)

I also found it started to rust after a few years, even though I had it media blasted and etched primed before painting, poor quality steel maybe?

Below is a link thanks to Canley Classic showing the Hood Frame and all the fittings for the Herald 13/60 which is exactly the same as the Vitesse, Canley's list the finisher (63) and one of the End Clips (64) NLA, surprisingly one of the End clips Right Hand side (64) is in stock!

PS - Here's a photo of my Old Vitesse a year after its full restoration, if you zoom in you can make out the PVC Finisher and Stainless end clips

Firstly a Happy New Year to all!

Hope a good time was had by all.

My NY resolution is, as it was last year, to get my Vitesse on the road this year. Not achieved in 2022 but much closer now 🤞

Currently planning hood fitting and found the relevant pages of my sold as "Complete" Parts Manual are missing 😩. My car came with a bare hood frame and no header rail so I have nothing to go on at the moment.

I have sourced most parts and have assumed the following order of events, although any advice would be very welcome!

    888D805B-5823-4A22-9509-3FA774CC4EBF.thumb.jpeg.8458b869606ce2b93b03219ab7d7381a.jpeg

    1. Hood fabric to stretch over the header and around into the underside channel. - Yes, this is how mine was done.

    2. The weather seal retaining channel will then be fitted over the hood material with self tappers. - Yes

    3. I have bought a new weather seal as shown below. I must admit I did expect it to have locating ridges to fit into the retaining channel. As it is simply square does this just glue into the retaining channel or is the seal shape incorrect? - This should just press into and be a tight fit within the U shaped channel, the U Section on your rubber is designed to overlap the top of the protruding section on your Windscreen Header rail.

    4. I also believe there should be some kind of finisher along the front leading edge but I can't find any supplier listing such a thing. I was given the following clips (below)  with the header rail and told they fix the ends of said finisher. Any advice as to where I can get/make such a trim/seal? - There is a finisher, it is Black Plastic and shaped to over lap the edge of hood as it wraps around the Header Rail. It is fixed at each end on the underside with a small self tapping screw, as far as I'm aware these are no longer available. (The clips below is for the the top of Door Quarter Light 'A' Post Seal each side).

    5. Should the header rail inside face be trimmed? Currently I have just painted it black but it might look good covered in vinyl?? - It should be trimmed in a black grained vinyl type material for later cars after 1968, a Light grey colour for earlier cars.

Finally, the seal I have bought for the side windows (fits in the aluminium channels around the side windows) feels too rigid, especially at the tight radius around the upper rear edge of the window. Section shown below. Does this look correct? - That looks the correct type of seal, again it is a press fit into the Aluminium channel sections cut to suit for each of the 3 sections per side (Try warming in hot water or gently with a Hair Dryer before fitting).

Any recommendations as to a better source of any of the seals mentioned above? - I tried an alternative 'P' section type seal off Seals Direct (I think) but the window used to drag, so I would stick with that shape.

Mant thanks in advance of any help offered.

  11. I know Fitchetts have been advertising a lot of N.O.S. Stuff on E-Bay, I also know they remanufacture various Herald/Vitesse body panels (Got the guided tour several years ago by Andy who works on the Sales counter) but I didn't realise they remanufactured rear over-riders?

I had a good set of Original undented Over-riders front and rear which I had triple plated by a specialist when I Rebuilt my Vitesse between 2002 and 2006, they still looked good when I sold the car on in 2015.

It's Definitely a good idea to coat the inside in your favourite Rust preventive fluid (Dinitrol 3125 in my case) a liberal coating of anti-seize to the captive nuts too.

They do, if you really desperately need some and can't find them, but usually they're much cheaper than that. That plastic coating usually peels off in places, so I've seen all kinds of replacements from vinyl coated to body-colour, or just plain black. I'm sure I have photos of home-made wooden cappings somewhere.

    Colin

When I restored my Vitesse I stripped all the old coating off using a sharp wood chisel if I remember correctly, it was a horrid job and took me ages!!

I was lucky that a local firm that does Powder Coating and Stove Enamelling was able to replicate the original mottled type cream finish to an excellent standard, this photo's a bit fuzzy but they really did look good as new when Dumelow's at Burton-upon-Trent had coated them.

I can see why people coat them in vinyl or just paint them though.
