Thanks for responses.
I am looking at the correct bolts for the steering column upper clamp, they should not be shear (according to Haynes etc) but if you look at the spec for UKC 7070 bolts via Google they pop up as Shear bolts.
Guess I will need to act on Clive's suggestions and take my time....so much for the quick job of changing the steering column bushes !!

Think I may have answered my own question!!, are they shear screws ??(should not bed as the manual simply refers to cap screws and neither Rimmer or Moss refer to UKC 7070 as shear bolts)
If so, how the hell do I remove them?

Desperately need some help.
Trying to remove Steering Column from spitfire 1500 (to replace upper and lower bushes). Am clear on procedure (via Workshop manual/Haynes Manual) but for the love of me I just cannot determine how to remove the Upper Column Clamp Bolts (UKC 7070).The workshop manual refers to cap screws, they look as if they are but with the "allen key centre" " filled in " !! See attached photo. So, no means to use allen key, spanner or whatever
Would really appreciate some help on this ie how do I unscrew these ??

I only live in Congleton, J17 M6 so close enough to pop down there.

I'm just about to embark on doing he bearings and UJ's on my 1500 spit.
As you say for that price it is not worth doing it yourself.

many thanks Ian and Clive, I'll try and find relevant "holes" on the gearbox and diff to take the brackets.

Just discovered that my exhaust is only mounted via the manifold and the silencer box.
Looking at either the Moss or Rimmer catalogues it would appear that the intermediate pipe should be secured in two places using brackets GEX 7511 AND GEX7496 (plus appropriate fittings).
For the love of me I just cannot work out where these brackets should be located gearbox, diff?
Would appreciate any help/advice on where they should be secured (any pics/diagrams would be fantastic)

I'll go with your thoughts are get my original steel ones refurbished.
Stockport Powder Coating seems to be one of the recommended best.

Any opinions on whether I should refurb (shot blast, paint etc) my rusty standard steel wheels (4.5J X 13) or replace with Alloys. If alloys which ones?.
If refurb existing wheels any suggestions for ensuring paint gets properly into the " inner/outer seam" or is it best to seam seal this?

Sounds straight forward, a colleague had suggested that I would need a "spring de-tensioning" tool/lever but this is obviously notthe case

yup Mjit I agree.
It does look as though these are the original fit....maybe a Friday car and the factory had run out of the proper bolts !!!
