  1. Dear all,

The saga started with the windscreen wiper motor (replaced) then the switch itself. Windscreen wipers work however found windscreen washer did not.

Found a Blue and Yellow wire going into the back of the windscreen wiper and when moved, yellow wire came off in my hand (honest). Pushed wire into hole, washers work. However after getting switch finally out of dash I thought a simple rewiring would do the trick - no. The back of switch is sealed. So I purchased a new switch from Rimmers. They only do the manual pump type now so that did not help my electric version issue.

I believe the yellow is joined in the loom to the blue so is the source of 12v for the +ve of the washer pump and have traced that yellow wire all the way to the + of actual washer pump. There is a green wire on the pump -ve and found that goes to chassis earth.

So I thought this is easy, get a 2 pole switch (non hold) and wire blue to one contact and yellow to other then when switch is depressed, pump operates.

No - all I get is a low grunt noise from pump and no washers. Proved there is no blockage and pump works by trying wires straight from battery - works good, got wet.

Can anyone help me on a bit of electrical wiring revision?

I tried earthing switch itself thinking the body acts as earth to chassis - no, same result.

Is the switch not meaty enough to switch the live or am I missing something obvious?

    Many thanks once again....

  2. Hi all again,

Work to get to MoT ready is progressing:

Rear light lenses and bad earths sorted with parts I acquired from a breakers yard (bad earth turned out to be an actual bulb holder).

Seat belt - more of an issue. Trying to save money by acquiring a single stem however very difficult. I need a Kangol type I believe but had no answer from Spitfire graveyard.

Finally windscreen wiper switch - can only find alternative version which does not come with later electric washer pump connections (Rimmers have not got any original type left apparently).

Trying to upload images of the seat belt fittings but having trouble with that too!

Anyway thought I would provide an update, etc. Many thanks

  3. Hi,

Does anyone know of a Triumph second hand spares specialist where I could get a Windscreen Wiper switch for 1500 with electric washer AND a seat belt holder (the one that the seat belt clips into and is bolted to car - drivers side).

Reluctant to purchase all new seat belt assembly and wiper switch new when there might be second hand parts around the country.

    Thanks :D

  4. Cheers Pete and I am grateful for the following and advice. Think I have lost half a litre at least on the floor before picking up manual.

Went to get a pump and caught Rimmers closing so am going down plugs and leads first and then will move to pump, pipes, etc.

    Thanks again.

  5. I am amazed, the CLUB has these falling out the doors as have 90% of any decent motor factors. Just ring Garth and it will be in the post quicker than quick. Oh yes, 01858 434424 extension no. 2.

Ordered on online tonight thanks along with leads and plugs. Many thanks.

  6. Taking fuel pump off did not go exactly well, pipe input back on for now until I stem flow of fuel - basics I know however got to learn somewhere.

Not attempting leads and plugs first so have been ordered.

Thanks and will keep up with the updates.

  7. My manual states to remove pump, take pipe of fuel tank and bung to stop fuel siphoning out.

On top of tank, i found the pipe coming out but is it threaded? I also found another bit of pipe next to fuel pipe, is this a breather?

  8. I have had a friend over from work and it looks like fuel pump however concerned after market replacements might not be the correct route to go down after reading over pressure issues on forum.

Any advice on standard pumps welcome. He has cleaned carbs, timing looks ok, dizzy ok, etc.

  9. Hesitation on throttle up canbe due to a rich as well as a weak mixture. The dreaded Waxstat thermostatic autochokes can do this. Do you have them fitted?

    John

Not sure I have auto chokes as I have a manual choke lever inside car. Don't know if the carbs themselves have thermostatic auto chokes...

  10. Thanks again Pete. With other stuff going on I had to cancel MoT today because I have not got time to address issue. Determined to make County Day, must try harder!

Will keep all updated, failed to get an MP4 uploaded, too large I suspect.

    Thanks all.
