  1. Hello all

I am trying to find out more about the history of my Spitfire.

The records at BMIHC have not survived. :(

My car was first registered on 18 October 1972. Registered MYD ***L This is a Taunton registration. My car was sold to its first owner (as shown in DVLA records)  He purchased the car in May 1973 from Mumfords BL dealership in Exeter.

He did not purchase the car on 18 October 1972.(as DVLA Records show)

I am interested to know what it did in the first 7 months of its life. Was it common practice to have a demonstrators and to move cars to other dealerships?

Would be interested in any info.

    thanks

    Paul

  2. Hi all

I bought a new prop for my Spitfire from a well known supplier. It was made in India.

Not recommended, the UJ's have failed in less than 1800 miles. Replacing the UJ's is a nightmare as the yoke and flanges are not machined flat on the outer surfaces, making it impossible to hold them square in the vice, needs to be square to push in the cups in the flange/yoke.  I resorted to using second hand flanges and knocking the cups in on the yokes with a hammer and drift- not recommended! I also found half a roller bearing in the grease inside one of the spiders of a UJ!

I would check carefully the quality of any new prop or find a good second hand item.

    Hope this helps someone

  3. Spitfire MK1V

My Spit has developed quite a bad clutch judder. It has done about 2500 miles is a nos Borg and beck clutch, flywheel has been skimmed flat. The judder got worst after the car was parked facing down on a severe hill. I think some oil leaked out of he gearbox. Is it possible for oil to contaminate the clutch in this way???

    thank you

    Paul
