As a slight drift, when I found my horror story, I was actually re-bushing the back end when I spotted the way the spring had been fitted. After the spring re-fit and new (I used) Polybush, the car handled and rode soooo much better. When you get it sorted, you will be pleased with the ride, but even more you will be exstatic because YOU have done it, believe me.
I've been involved with most of the work on the car, I'm not a mechanic but I dont mind trying stuff as long as I have people around who can help and the people on here have been great with me. I really appreciate the support on here.
I ordered a bush pack and pad as suggested earlier in this thread, i now realise that stuff that I was advised to get may be for a mk4 also as I don't think the rear spring pad I ordered isnt needed for the mk3.
This has been an expensive piece of work

Check what you gave against this parts diagram..
but, I'm sure that Pete is correct, that you have a spring for a mkiv. It looks very much like mine. Mine is held with 4 studs, yours should have 6 and a different plate fixing system.
Agreed, I'm taking it out in the morning when my cousin is free again, you and Pete seem to be 100% correct, it looks like the wrong spring
I'll get back to you both in the monring

Wait... I really think that you should let us look at some photos or you could end up with the wrong bits for the right spring or the wrong spring with the right bits. It will take time and effort the get it out but if this goes in wrong you could end up righting off the car or injuring someone. Hate to be a pessimist, but this has to be done right. Take this from one who was horrified at what was done to mine, and then given an mot pass.
No problem and i completely agree.
I'll take it out (wont be today), photograph BOTH and post them on here.
Thanks again gents, I always appreciate you guys and the help you give.

yes a very wrong spring,, depends just what you ordered , to fit that you need a a swing box a top plastic block, and a bottom clamp plate
as used on MkIV and 1500
If i ordered the bits yours talking about would this spring fit mine or am I just better off getting GB Springs to get me the correct spring?

I'll take it off and take pictures and get back to you
Thanks again for all your help!!!

from your photo thats a mk4 > swing spring has a (4 stud and box ) you are trying to fit in a fixed spring (6 stud ) diff with a 6 hole top plate
it wont work
the clamp you see i reckon is just for transporting, but what you have is all wrong
unless your car had a 4 stud swinger fitted and things like shaft lengths come into question
i guess your orig spring does not have the kink for the swinger box
Pete
I see what you mean now Pete, no the original one doesn't so it seems i've might have been sent the wrong spring

Did you compare your new spring to the old one before fitting?
Yes, it does look different but GB Springs said it was higher rated so I assumed it wound, the knuckle is different, I may have to take it out again and take pics of both

there are 6 studs and 6 nuts and six holes in the plate. We just didnt have them all in place when I took the pic.
Sorry for sounding lost here, have I basically been sold the incorrect spring?

Have you got a photo of the spring out of the car along with the fittings that you have?
sorry no i dont

ok, at long last due to lockdown and medical issues on my part my cousin and I attempted to replace the rear spring for the new one I bought from GB SPRINGS.
We have a problem.
Keep in mind I'm stupid and not a mechanic. The plate that goes over the spring wont locate properly because there's a knuckle on the spring which would mean lopsided pressure on the spring plate.
You'll see from the picture that we cant get enough thread through the nuts and even if we could, it still doesn't seem right.
This is the spring I was sold by GB SPRINGS, I made it clear it was a 1970 Mk3 and even gave the number plate so I'm confident they send me the correct one. He did say its a higher rated spring than the originals but should there be some fitting pack to allow for that knuckle in the middle that isn't there on the old spring?
I hope this meandering comment makes sense. I'm calling on the holy wise men of the TSSC community do dig me out of yet another hole this serious pen pusher has found himself in.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Hello all,
I'm looking to replace the boot hinges on my Mk3 Spitfire. Has anyone bought any recently that you'd recommend.
Some I've seen online look terrible so any pointers for a new set would be appreciated.
Cheers

I had a klaxon on my GT6, but it got nicked, they didn't even undo the bolts, just hacksawed it off! Toe rags!

Think back to who you got with it. It may have been a revenge attack! 🤣

What ever happened to the life shortening air horns I used to put on my cars when I was a teenager. One blast at a zebra crossing would reduce the life expectancy of any unsuspecting granny in an instant. The horn on my Spitfire is laughable so I was actually thinking of replacing it with a blaster from the past.

Possibly poor earthing. The hornpush earths through the little pencil, down the column, and the there should be a wire bridging across the steering joint. And I believe ab=nother earthing the steering rack itself.
The way to check the earthing is to try bypassing the hornpush etc. Use a length of wire attached to the purple wire coming up to the steering column, and earth it somewhere. If they work OK then you know what the issue is.
100% correct, I've just replaced both on mine. I couldn't even see the lower one until I jet washed the bottom of the column / rack.

Thanks Wayne. It did indeed come with its own bushes so I'll just order the pad and radius arm bushes which makes it a lot cheaper.
I appreciate the heads up with getting the bushes out too. I wont even try another way, just go straight for the burn.
Cheers

Page three has the rear leaf spring eye bushes/ kit, bottom left, and one row above that to the right is the rectangular pad for inside the swing-spring mounting box.
Stabilising arm I'm assuming that's what I call the rear radius arm, the kit is the one directly above the rectangular pad.
Thanks Colin.
You see, this is team work in perfect harmony. I can just about operate a computer......
And you guys are the absolute brains of the outfit.
Thanks for your help!
I'll get this ordered and plan for the swap out of the spring.

Last time I drove on the M6 I was too frightened to nod off.
Over here the best device for keeping you awake is called the East European Driver. The other half also screams her head off if another car comes within half a mile, so I need to adjust her settings to a more reasonable distance.
As well as making Moaning and Across the Country DIY Job Assigning an Olympic sport my GF also sits there like she's on a white knuckle ride.
The rest of my family say I'm the safest driver they know but my GF though keeps me on my toes and awake with a good old brake press from the passenger seat and the classic seat foam throttle grip.

Thanks Pete, as I'm the most heavy duty pen pusher your ever going to come across and not mechanical in any way shape or form, I'm going to ask the question you didn't want me to.
Which of the items on the page for the rear will I need, all of them?

One safety feature that has never really seen the light of day would be a device for detecting if you were nodding off.
Modern technology has made driving very boring and sleep inducing in a eurobox. But the manufacturers haven't, as far as I know, come up with snooze detector.
Even in the TR4A on very long runs at the wrong time tiredness can ignore the bumps and rattles.
I attempted to find a device (any device) to help, not stay awake, but detect a dodgy situation. I don't snore so a sound detector was out.
The nearest I got was a pair of glasses with Mercury switches on the arms which went into panic mode if my head nodded. But I considered them something less than useless.
It must be a very difficult thing to make as they ended up with the driverless car to circumvent the research
Roger
I find my other half keeps me awake incessantly adding to the list of jobs I have to do back at home. It never fails to keep me awake.

Happy New Year everyone.
As an update to this conversation. My new spring from GB Springs finally turned up yesterday. I haven't seen it yet as I had it delivered direct to my fathers as that's where the car is.
I know it's important not to go off topic on these threads but this is clearly linked, can anyone suggest a non bank breaking bush kit for the spring and stabilising arm?
It makes sense I replace these while the spring is off but some of the ones I've seen are crazy prices. Any suggestions, links to items and advice will as always be greatly appreciated.

He's called it a 'transverse spring', is that correct?
-
After 3 months of many attempts to get a reply from GB Springs they've finally got back to me!! Yay!!!
I'll get the spring delivered in the next week or so and maybe have it down as a Christmas project to replace that and all the rear end bushes.
I clearly don't like having money in my pocket.

ok thanks pete, I'll basically get GB Springs to take this Mk 4 one back as he's supplied it incorrectly. My emails to him state Mk3 so he I'm sure he'll take it back.
