  1. Would you beeeeereliiiiieve it!!!!!

After spending hours and hours cleaning the pins, the cap, my fingernails and resetting them twice with tweezers and wobbly hands, I gave up. No way would that last pin, number 27, go in.

So I took the opposite cap off....f f ffs sake..............only 25 in there!!!! What a relevation ......the little barstewad had fallen right through the central 'grease way' into the opposite cap!!!!!

I give in, this car dislikes me. I'm sure now because on my last attempt I'm still a mm short of circlip groove, so I have a faller again!!! My vice is ko'd and tapping the caps is no good. Given up for today.

Btw, Rimmers did not know how many pins are in their uj.... it is 26 :)

    AAAAARGHhhhh

  2. I was too tight to let even one in! he gave up.

Look... the new cap without one roller is very tight on the old uj. An old cap could be used on the new uj?

Or must I get this back in and use new on new

I've packed in now. Swafegared and cleaning nails out in the sun. this car is not going back on road in a hurry :(

  3. I'm with Rob on that! First time I have tried the index finger for beneficial reasons but..... NO. Still won't go :(

I'v jiggled and wiggled and now wasted hours trying to count them and compare to old ones. I get 26 or 27 or even 28 but my eyes are not what they were!

Can I not just leave it out.

Old uj is a nice tight fit in new cap even with that one missing???

New uj sitting 3/4 finished in vice looking very lonely.

  4. Well I've got the n/s hub off and the caps moving. Giving it a rest 'till tomorrow as knackered. Uj feels pretty solid though. I will replace it however.

When working it on the bench, balanced on the link, the drive shaft rotated freely....but occasionally seemed to jam?? A bit back rotation freed it. I let the shoes of a bit but am not sure yet if it was them or a trunnion bearing problem. There is no play in the trunnion I think?? How can I check?

To get to the Allen keys to remove the inner flange, I guess there is a "sweet spot" to remove the bolts? Not tried yet.

And.... this door handle....oh , enough  Ts ready ATB all.

  5. I have had the o/s shaft off and uj done. Hub seemed to be fine. Never checked the o/s 'short shaft' guess that is what the manual calls the inner axle shaft?

I'll bite the bullet and do the n/s uj and check both hub and short shaft.

How the hell do you adjust the door catch when the inside handle will not pull the catch far enough??? ? replace all those pivots?? or just grease it all and use your shoulder to get out the car :)

  6. Well, just been under and jacked both links up so the axles clear the chassis and....the n/s inner axle flange into the diff has play and 'knocks. Just a little, but twisting it by hand back and forth I can feel play and hear the knock. If you want a video I need 3 hands!.

the o/s is solid and quiet. Rotating the prop you can see that fractional delay on the n/s rotating.

I'm going for a walk with Mrs and a bit think and then put it on road and record the doomp doomp doomp noises.

    Ohhhh rollocks :)

  7. Thanks Pete. I've just cut the grass and am knackered:) I'll try that tomorrow.

When I rotate near side there is no noise...????. If I put it in gear then they, of course,  rotate opposite ways, and the noise is there again....

    Edited...

Alright...your right :( jacking upright up reduces that noise.  Ijut I am.

Ok. Tomorrow a road test at 5mph with my 40yr old daughter chasing me with a microphone.  :)

  8. Hi Mark, well... as far as I know it is ok but you need to wash the whole system out first and then blow it all back in from your bleed valves. I suppose it could be good if you have a multi port master and or a split system left/right back/front and/or a servo too but I think on our simple systems that 32 foot per second squared is fine or even your mates ankles and knees :)

  9. They came from the Ship Inn on Holy island (lindisfarne) where I visit regularly.  A fat American woman (aren't they all) had fallen on it in the garden area and I offered to repair it. There were 32 pieces! Talk about a 3D jigsaw!!! Anyway,  I got 5 pints for the repair.

You wannabe see the next job I got from the pub...photo..got a nights b&b for that repair

  10. Got this car last month as a lot of you will know by now, what with me pestering you all about my 'little problems' :)

I have no history and a very poor idea of its life. Can anyone help?

MoT history is interesting!! Very little mileage over the past few years!

seller was from Poole in Dorset and a bit vague but not suspicious.  The name on V5 was some lassie from london, seller said that her dad gave it to her about October 2018 and she p/x it straight away for a newer car, at a garage local to the seller he bought it a few months ago but never v5d it as v5 was in Cyprus?? Where the 2nd last owner (ladies father) now lived. V5 arrived by post just as I was buying it.

so...odd.....full set of service spares including used headlamp deflectors and a ferry ticket to some French port from early 2018 were found inside and seller had said it had been driven to Cyprus.

I have the ladies email and asked but got no reply.

    Anyone from Dorset know it?

picture for those who haven't seen them yet. DVLA have had the v5 for 6 weeks now. (I hope?)

  11. These were Rimmers greasable ujs and I put them in the 'right's way and like I said, the shaft pivot was really nice and tight but the flange had play, just a fraction but this was the one I had dropped two needles in and been wacking it to try to get circlips in!!.

When I realised and reinstalled it properly, the circlips were really tight to get in and I had no up and down play but still slack rotation. I felt that the tightness should be like the shaft half but could not get it any tighter so went ahead and refitted all.

    Perhaps I have 'bent' something?

It is still making that dosh dosh dosh noise. Is it absolutely positive that more noise on right turn means right uj is slack?

I find it hard to imagine the loading it takes and how the noise is caused :) I'm done in. Need a rest. Start again tomorrow.  Thanks for all the help. Steering column is much more secure,  thanks Colin.
