Colin Lindsay
I got an invite to a 'classic' event taking place 100 yards from my house in the grounds of the local Demense, Primary School and storage yard so as I was free decided to take the Herald down and man a few traffic points for an hour or two. It's a charity Memorial Run in aid of a local who died quite young from cancer, proceeds to cancer charities as well as the local Primary School. Lorries, Tractors, old vehicles and Classic cars, spread over a wide area with courtesy buses in between. Lorries in the Demense, tractors along the tow path, classics in the yard. I arrived at 11am at the Classic Car site, a crisp cold but sunny morning. That was it. The little blue Vauxhall, me, and a green 1960 Morris Minor I found in the disabled parking at the school. No other classic cars, one steam traction engine, and a few ancient but still in-use tractors. Anyone seriously think I was going to take part in a cavalcade of 97 HGVs and 74 modern tractors? I think it would have been a bit... ludicrous... not to mention intimidating... so I sat back and just watched the others. I did find a potential project, though, hidden at the rear of the storage yard. Must make a few enquiries. Still, that's another 400 yards on the mileage this year. At present there's over £10,000 in donations with more to come, so a worthwhile cause at any event. I'm wondering if they'll make it an annual event?
