  1. Thanks, I think I'll either have the Alternator checked and repaired or replace it.
  2. Ok, I’ve got; Tick Over, ignition only: 12.25 V Tick Over, lights on: 12 V 2000 rpm, ignition only: 13.9 V 2000 rpm, lights on: 13.5 V
  3. Thanks I’ll have another go with the meter later. The ignition light isn’t glowing as far as I can tell.
  4. Sorry, should have said. Alternator. The car is a TR5. The story is I was driving home the other night and started to lose electrics. The battery had been fully charged before I left home as I use a CTEK battery charger when the car isnt being used for a while. First I noticed the headlamps were pretty useless, then the indicators wouldn't flash, then I lost overdrive. I got home and parked the car in the garage. The following morning the battery was completely flat. I started the car using jump leads. My multi meter indicated the alternator was putting out about 13.5 - 13.8 volts at 2500 RPM. I bought a new battery and all is OK for now. But the ammeter reading suggests to me that the alternator isn't charging sufficiently. But I've not long had the car and never had a car with an ammeter before, so I'm looking for confirmation of what I should be seeing.
  5. Apologies if this has been covered before. What reading would you expect from an ammeter when driving at night with headlamps on, assuming a brand new and fully charged battery? Mine is reading slightly negative/discharge most of the time, in a variety of driving conditions including when driving on the motorway at 60-70 mph.

    Why?

I have driven past the house where this car lived and have seen the car many times whilst taking my daughter to school. It's not like it's a deprived area or anything like that. Absolutely senseless and very sad.
  7. John, I did similar to my GT6 using Silent Coat sound deadening panels. As far as I can see they are similar to dynamat but cheaper. I havent measured the outcome as you have done but I found the results to be very good. I can still hear the engine note and the exhaust just as you would wish, but it's no longer like sitting in an oil drum. It's possible to conduct a conversation and listen to the stereo at most reasonable speeds. Unwanted heat in the cabin has also been almost eliminated.
  8. Thanks I'll take a look at an electronic flasher unit at some point.
  9. Fixed it. A PO had fitted LEDs. The Trafficator circuit doesn't like LEDs. I fitted an original style bulb and all is now well, if slightly less bright.
  10. What's happened to 'View New Content'?
  11. Thanks Doug, I'll take a look at it tomorrow all being well and report back....
  12. I've realised I don't particularly like change. It all seems very bright and shouty.... I'll get used to it I expect.....
  13. When turning right both indicators flash, I can hear the relay clicking on and off and the green 'trafficator' lamp on the speedo flashes. All good. When turning left both indicators flash, I can hear the relay clicking on and off but the green 'trafficator' lamp on the speedo doesn't flash. Any suggestions?
  14. I've solved the mystery I think. A tell-tale lamp has been fitted between the speedo and the rev counter which indicates when overdrive is engaged. The 'day' controller on the box turns the tell-tale lamp on and off with very little adjustment inbetween. When the headlamps are turned on the 'night' controller is a dimmer switch for the tell-tale with far more adjustment than the day controller. As far as I can see that's it. Seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to. 'Operation Overkill' springs to mind............ Dave
  15. I don't think that's its purpose Doug. The TR5 and TR6 already have an instrument dimmer (very posh, I'm not accustomed to such luxury on a Triumph!) As far as I can tell, twiddling the controls on the mystery box has no discernable effect on anything. The only thing I can think of is the Halogen wiring loom thats installed. I think it's for spotlamps but none are fitted. There's an on/off switch for the Halogen kit fitted on a blanking panel where the radio would be. When it's switched 'on' I can hear the relay clicking when full beam is switched on and off. I've attached a couple of photos. I would ask the PO, but I don't think he had much idea what was fitted and what wasn't. He hadn't owned the car long. At this stage, I'm inclined to leave well alone and have a cup of tea..... (PS; Apologies for all the pics being 90 degrees out. I don't know why theyre loading like that.)
