Can`t quite see in that photo but, have you got the spacer in front of the starter?,without that it wont line up with the ring gear properly,(ask me how i know).
i would join the 2 heavy wires on the solenoid and extend the ignition wire down to the starter terminal.(With the battery disconnected).
Either that or put it on the bench and test it with jump leads.

I had a Hi torque on my Vitesse that cranked really slowly,so much so the car rarely fired up before the battery died.
I did away with the solenoid, ran new heavy cables everywhere,no change.I bit the bullet and bought another starter and hey presto,it whizzes over and fires up straight away now.
Test the starter on a bench if you can to prove it works properly.Repro solenoids are generally crap(imho).

Who built the engine?,i would certainly question any builder who bunged a cam in,big valve head with competition double springs(not required imho) without improving flow and upping the compression ratio?.

Went from Surrey down to Hayling Island yesterday and sat on the beach for an hour, pulled in to get petrol on the way home, went to the cap and...bugger.
I lost the keys to the car about a month ago,so i changed the ignition and boot lock, forgot the petrol cap.

Always wondered why my Vitesse nearside rear wheel looks further under the arch than the offside one, maybe during the tub off process it got put back off centre.
It is a MK 1 converted to CV so i had to weld the wishbone brackets on,i used the WSM i think from memory.I know this won`t affect the look of the wheels.

Got to be electrics as a lot of us used to turn the ignition off and back on again to make them backfire. In our younger day's of course Could also be a loose wire on the ignition circuit ?
Tony.
I used to do that in my works CVH Escort van in a tunnel on the M25,great days.

I had mine redone buy a metal polisher,he removed the anodising and then polished them up,still look good a couple of years later.

Mine`s a 68 MK 1 which i have owned since 1985 so probably original,no mine don`t look like that.

I agree the nut and bolt cleaning method works well.
However, I can't agree about 'paint'. I sealed the inside of the fuel tank on my Scimitar GTE using a POR-15 sealant kit bought from Frost. This was done about 4 years ago and POR-15 had recently been reformulated to resist unleaded and ethanol in fuel. The Scimitar has a Weber 38DGAS carb and the finest rust particles could pass through the filters and regularly, clogging the narrow idle circuits in the carb and causing rough tickover and snatchy progression.
Since I used the sealer, the filters have remained clean and the carb hasn't blocked. The car is used plenty, clocking up about 5k miles per year.
If you find the problem recurs, I would recommend the POR-15 sealant - it's a lot cheaper than a new tank!
Nigel
+1 for tank sealer,i broke down a few times in my Herald when i restored it to the road after a 30 year layup.I used the stuff you slosh around inside and leave to go off for 4 days.
Been fine for 8 years so far.

That would be a good personal reg no. for me (Povey).
If you buy it,lose that air filter, more restrictive than the original.

As the title says, just been for a run around Windsor/Maidenhead in the Vitesse for the first time since October, and after fitting the exhaust spacer and a tune up,also made a bracket for the electronic pickup for the speedo sensor.
Happy to report all is 100%,running sweet and speedo working again.
The joys of top down motoring in a 2.5 Vitesse.

Trying to build up a set of CV shafts on to some Roto hubs etc.
Does it matter which way round the outer bearing goes?,reason i ask is that the one i took of had the taper inwards to the hub <
I checked the images from Canleys website and it is unclear,Rimmers parts image shows it the other way >.
Obviously the bearing outer sleeve has to go on first(after the seal) if it`s this way to the hub >

Iain,
I would be really interested to see what has been done on the carb side. Cylinders 2 and 5 don't get fed as well as the others.
I've been working at the manifold on my 2.5 litre GT6 to reduce this problem but think I may need to go further to reduce the 'gates' that mask 2 and 5.
Nigel
I will try to find a picture of my HS6 manifold on my 2.5 Vitesse, modified in 2016 ish by Gareth Thomas,i can tell you he removed a lot of material.Engine is great though.

I used a can of Australian stuff called "StartYouB4stard" on an old V8 Merc years ago.

Thanks to Ian and Nick for those replies,i forgot about the CT thread as i don`t really check there any more.
I will contact 2spec.I don`t really want to take it off the road until the end of the year though. On the speed/revs thing,i have a saloon box with J type and 13 inch wheels with 175/70 tyres,70 mph is 2900 RPM,that`s with an electronic speedo and rev counter, and checked with Sat Nav.
Latest problem is i have lost the bloody keys,i have to change the ignition switch and door and boot locks.

Hi,
my GT6 2.5 had a 3.63 +OD. Now a 3.27 +OD. Perfect for the motorway. If I need to accelerate quickly I use the gearbox.
I believe the GT6 was 3.89 with OD & 3.27 without. Minty lambs calc is wrong in this respect.
Check your speedo as this is calibrated to the rear-drive ratio. My speedo reads low with the 3.27.
Cheers,
Iain.
Sorry for the hijack but i see in Ians reply he has a quaife in a 3:27,i have a Blackline atb ready for my 2.5 +o/d Vitesse with a 3:27 already in there but i was told it can`t fit in due to the carrier?,I have a stronger carrier already fitted by Mike Papworth,Will it fit?.

When i was 17 i had a friend who was into Mini`s,he had an oil in the garage drum on which he used to wash down mini engines with thinners, the thinners drained into the drum.
One day he was welding in the garage and the drum blew up,killed him and his father who was in the garage with him.

I fitted one to my 1500 Herald, fitted fine, the only thing i noticed was that it came with a 16lb cap, also the outlet to the expansion bottle never got hot water through it,i don`t know if that means the neck is right or not.The car never overheated according to the gauge.

Standard rockers and cover?,
My roller rockers fouled the cover slightly so had to adjust the cork gasket?.

What Pete said, the chassis bracket bolt holes are slotted to make it easier.

Mine came from Larkspeed and the description looks exactly the same as your link.As to driving,i found no difference in pedal feel or town driving with the paddle plate.
Also my Vitesse was rollered at 170Bhp,it never slipped on the old clutch, just wore out quickly.
