i wired mine direct to the battery as i wanted it to power my 12 volt compressor and would not want to leave the ignition on while i went round all the tyres .

    cheers

Hi David - So is just a case of running wires from the + and - battery terminals? If so what gauge wiring would I need?

  2. Hi All

I want to fit a 12v socket to run a sat nav or charge a phone. Do I connect straight to the battery terminals or to the ignition. The battery route sounds easier but would that cause problems?

    Thanks

  3. I had an overdrive unit fitted last year to my vitesse mk 2 gearbox. Everything works fine but I've noticed that the gear change is much stiffer after the engine has warmed up - maybe after 10 miles or so of driving. Is this normal?

Also, is there an easy way to top up the gearbox oil or do I have to remove the housing from inside the car to get access?

    Thanks

  4. Hi Mick & Clive

Thanks for the advice - I think I'm going to swap back to the strombergs before the rolling road. Switching to SUs has been an expensive experiment but I guess it's all part of the learning process!

  5.

Checked the needles and they're stamped BAE.

The engine is a standard unit from a 2000 mk 2. It runs well but a little lumpy on tick over (better when warm) but I'm only getting about 170 miles on a full tank (was getting just over 200 miles when I had the Stromberg 150s). Could the low consumption be due to the needles and if so what type of needles would be better?

Going for a rolling road session at Revivals soon so wondering if I should change the needles now or wait until I see what the rolling road reveals.

    Any advice would be welcome

    Thanks

  6. the code is stamped on them. You need to take the piston out the dashpot, undo the needle retaining screw, and carefully get the needle out along with the holder. Stamped up at the top. No, carbs wont need retuning after as long as you put it back together the same.

Thanks Clive - I'm taking the car to a rolling road in a few weeks time and they've asked what needles I've got.

  7. Sorry if it's a dumb question but I need to find a good passenger door for my MK 2 Vitesse convertible - are Vitesse and Herald  doors interchangeable? Apart from Quiller, does anyone know of a good place to find one?

    Thanks

  8. robin   i wont be reprofiling needles but willing to have a  experienced  ,look, listen,   and even  colour tune and exhaust gas check. if needed

we can certainly look at the state of your strombergs and do some work on them should you wish to refit them

        regards  Pete

Thanks Pete - will be in touch. Robin
  9. I am sure people may know a rough spec for the needles (I don't but the info is out there somewhere) but a rolling road will either have a selection of needles, or will profile one to get a perfect setup across the whole rev range. This is very difficult to do at home unless you have a wideband lambda sensor and controller to check the CO levels when driving.

    Thanks Clive

  10. as your local to me why not pop over for a cuppa and a look see

if they are ok its easy

if a rebush is needed  ive used the carb exchange in leighton buzzard

    Hi Pete

Thanks for the kind offer. I'll drop you a line to arrange a suitable time to come over - maybe sometime later this month if the weather is OK?

  11. Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere (couldn't see any threads) but how easy/difficult is it to bring a mk 1 vitesse engine up to a mk 2 spec. Is it just a question of swapping heads and camshaft or would other things need to be changed as well.

Also is there much difference in normal driving between the two engines i.e. is it worth the hassle/expense?

    Thanks for any advice

    or

the guts are same as a speedo but calibration could take a lot of trial and error to get the 3.55:1 ratio

are you sure its the unit and not the dizzy drive or cable ??

    Hi Pete

just got my tacho back from JDO and it's working perfectly. Great service so thanks for the recommendation

  13. Sorry - one more question

If I wanted to improve the mpg of the twin SU's, how would I know what needles to swop to - or would a rolling road set up provide the info?

Also, is it worth investing in something like a colortune kit to set up either SU or stromberg  carbs?

  14. Hi Clive

I think the carbs came off a TR6

As I'm not planning to modify my current engine do you think it's better to try and tune the SU's and change the needles to achieve better consumption or just swap back to my strombergs which we're working ok?

    Thanks

    Robin

  15. Hi All

A quick update - I decided to swap to twin 1 3/4 SU's on my vitesse (actually running on a mk 2 2000 engine with overdrive) and I'm pretty sure there's virtually no difference in performance. However, when I had the strombergs, I got about 200 miles from the tank whereas now I'm getting about 100 miles. I think the SU's are set up correctly (though I think the smell of petrol is stronger but no leaks) so I'm not sure why the dramatic increase in fuel consumption. If SU's are generally thirstier then I think I may swap back to the strombergs

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

  16. I fitted a pair of black leather MGF seats, which are in excellent condition, on bespoke alloy frames into my Triumph Vitesse convertible, earlier this year. These retain the original runners to have full forward / back travel that works far better than the original Triumph runners.

They are great for a saloon / estate, however I am 5'11" and they won't go quite far enough back for me as the B post in a convertible restricts rear movement. So, I have now bitten the bullet and bought yet another pair of seats (MX5 seats this time) as I think they will fit the convertible better. My winter project is now to change the seats yet again! Whilst I am at it, I will be fitting a new bellhousing, changing brake and clutch mater cylinders, and fitting a new gearbox tunnel.

I'm selling the MGF seats on eBay if anyone is interested, item 171571088993.

I also have the original seats, if anyone would like these FOC.

Hi Billuss 99 - do you still have either the MGF or the original Vitesse seats (Mk2) ? I've been away from the forum for a while and have only just seen your post. Thanks. Robin
