  1. New fuse didn't blow - it was very loose in the fuse holder though - would that have caused a blow - rattling around like that?

  3. Spitfire 1500 The 35A fuse went while I was out today - no indicators, overdrive, wipers etc etc... Easy to replace but before I do what should I look for - it obviously went for a reason...? Pete
  4. Spitfire 1500 Just a quickie to get a couple of opinions... I am having trouble getting a smooth tickover. Compression test gives me: 1..........140 psi 2..........142 3..........130 4..........130 Do you reckon this justifies taking the head off? I'm quite happy to do that but it would be nice to think it's worth it... Pete
  5. Hi all I am replacing the brake master cylinder on a late GT6 that originally had a servo fitted as standard. I have fitted an aftermarket Powertune replacement servo...BUT I understand the master cylinders fitted to servo cars were 0.75" diam. I can only find one place that has one - MEV Spares. It is a lot less expensive than, say Rimmers, who are saying the only option is now to fit the 0.70" diam. as the larger bore is unavailable. So - couple of questions really - do I trust MEV Spares and do I really need the larger bore? Thanks Pete
  6. Ah... I've just had a look at my calipers and there is no indication of size - see pics. I assume they must be type 14 - ? No idea what make they are...?

  11. Can any kind person possibly pop me a close up photo of the bonnet and boot of a 1500 Spit. I have bought transfers to go them as the car has had a respray in the past and they weren't replaced and I need to get the positioning correct. Either that or some really accurate measurements!   12. Morning all. Looking to replace the rusty chipped wheelnuts on the Spitfire - but the wheels are "Ally Cat" alloys - bit like a Minilite. The wheel nuts are non tapered and have a thick washer to spread the load against the wheel - and can't find anything anywhere. Any suggestions? Thanks Pete
  13. Hi Catalogues show an "insulating block gasket" sandwiched between two gaskets on the inlet manifold of each carb. Every parts sales companies say 'not available' any more - only the thin gaskets that go each side of the insulating block. Do I need to worry or can I just fit the thin gaskets without the blocks? Pete

Hi all I am replacing the upper and lower column bushes as there was play in them - now found out there is a choice of standard replacements at about a fiver each or "uprated" ones (poly bush stuff) at around £25 each.   16. Hi Thanks all for replies. No servo so not brake fluid. It's white smoke rather than steam, but compression readings are all good, so I'm not sure if it is head gasket? I wouldn't normally worry too much but on start up there really is a huge amount. I'll see if I can take a photo!!!!!
  17. Triumph Spitfire 1500 - 1979 Car starts fine and runs ok but on start up there is a huge amount of white billowing smoke from the exhaust. It calms down a bit as it warms up. I've just run compression test on all four - no problems - all identical at 10.5 psi. I noticed however, if I take the oil filler cap off while the engine is running it stalls - the revs drop right off. I didn't think this should happen??? Seems to be a lot of pressure inside the rocker box. Any thoughts? Cheers Pete
  18. Still fiddling with my carbs... So, textbook says an eighth inch drill should just fit under the float when it is held upside down and resting on the valve but not with the needle fully depressed?????? Two photos here: float lid is held upside down and the float is resting, under gravity, on the valve in first pic - but there is a huge gap where the drill is. Second pic is my finger pushing the float all the way down on the needle valve. Where should I be measuring - or is it all wrong??? The float is all nylon so there is no adjustment that I can see. P
