  1. Obviously if you don’t have another car then you can’t use classic insurance. As said normal insurance I’m sure will be very expensive because a classic will be easily written off (financially). I guess get some quotes and see. I hope you can get the car you want and prove us wrong. Good luck.

sorry I mean wiring and plumbing really. Be nice to see that in the flesh so I can relate to the advice already given.

I.e stick that in their using that connection and wire to that etc etc

PS vacuum gauge looks cool and actually useful but does the Spit manifold require drilling in order to fit one ?

    Grant,

Dials! Now you're talking! Oil, ammeter, voltmeter, vacuum. You can never have too many worry gauges.

    Doug

Doug. We need to talk Sir.

Looking at oil temp and oil pressure and battery voltage. Looking at the Smiths Pilot gauges because they would all be matching full dials.

Vacume gauges look cool but are they any practical use?

Doug are you willing to help me out on fitting? I’m confused by what adapters I need for starters.

    Hello Mark

This how I have done mine a bit OTT but I like it!

But did you not say your Dad was good at this sort of thing?

I am going to change the vacuum gauge for an oil temperature one when I fit the new engine.

That’s my type of dash. Well done Sir :D

  5. Well I’m a novice so my suggestions would be low level stuff and may well be a repeat of the things covered in your first work shop.

Carb servicing/rebuild. Operation and setting plus balancing.

    Checking valve clearances

Vehicle servicing and key areas of wear I should keep an eye on.

As you know I’m wanting to fit additional dials so obviously happy to use my car for that if you feel it’s an appropriate use of time.

    Pete & Ray,

I would love to attend again however, I suspect there will be more interest after the success of the last one. In which case I would be disappointed, but happy to stand down if the numbers get to be too many. Must remember to leave my wallet at home in case the lure of the club shop proves too much.

Nice to see you though fella. If it gets bigger then hopefully more dates can be added, or a full weekend with accommodation. The worlds our Oyster. From small seeds Trees are grown. ( end of metaphor over load )

  7. Ok bit of an update. Took her for a spin whilst the weather was good.

Less Kangaroo now once heated up. Being driving like Miss Daisy but opened her up today. Revs no problem whilst stationary but will not go above 4K revs whilst driving. Like hitting a brick wall with some backfire. So as suggested I’m sure it’s electrical. I’ll start with sorting new plugs and take it from there.

Few oil leaks too unfortunately so probably some seals will need looking at main one is directly under the exhaust mid section so I’m guessing drive shaft ?

    Thanks for all your help

  8. The dash pots had oil in but I emptied it and put in 20/40. Needles look very clean but a bit of grime here and there so I cleaned that up. Jets look in the right place when pulling the choke etc but I oiled the mechanisms and the choke leaver seems to work better. Didn’t get too adventurous doing anything else in case I made things worse (easy for me to do)

put in some redex and run her with that whilst stationary. Things seem fine but hopefully a test drive tomorrow will tell. I know carbs can seem to work great until the engine is actually under load so not counting any Chickens yet.

  9. Ok thanks for the info. I get the general gist. I'll take a look inside and see if I can spot any obvious issues although they will have to be obvious

In for a penny in for a pound springs to mind.

  10. Ok Haynes manual out. Looking at carb diagram. Is their a drainage screw to remove the oil ? From the dashpot. I see a screw but it's labeled up as screw so no bloody help there.

Assume removing dashpot will release oil all over the carb body ?

    First of many noob questions

  11. Thanks Pete. Completely new to these carbs. Got them on my motorbike but nothing like these things. Thanks for the tip I'll read up and work out how to fill them up and where to put the oil.

Oh yes big smiles all round. As said previously been waiting 25 years to get my Spitfire and take it off my bucket list.
