have you tried to lube the cable  ?

and run the speedo off a battery drill if the needles steady its the cable not the head

    Pete

Yes to the lube and yes to the test. It's not the cable,

sorry to repeat but wavy needles are nearly always cable drives not the instrument  would hate you pay a for a refurb and it remains the same

and we were involved with testing speedos and tachographs for 25 years  this is not just a pub talk  idea

please  do check it out, let us know

    Pete

Not to doubt your invaluable experience, given the age of the instrument/ drive, wouldn't it make sense to send it all in for refurbishment as Colin suggests?

That's an 'interesting' allegation that I'd like to see expanded and explained further, please.

    Thanks,

    Gully

Sadly, I didn't probe further. He simply said, "try to get a set of those fancy red performance leads everyone has, to make the most of those (W78) plugs". I've learnt not to ask too many questions with grumpy old timers who know their stuff.

The car has never run this well since my late 2019 purchase and its either down to his skill, the plugs, or both.

    Hi Aviv,

I bought a set of 8mm, I can't remember where from and seem to work fine with W78's and Pertronix Ignitor. I only bought a set because they were on offer and I had no idea what the PO had fitted. An easy tick box!

    Iain

Cheers Iain! The GT6 loves the W78 plugs (installed today) and has a Magnetronic ignition system & a Lucas gold coil. The leads are the club shop leads that appear to have resistance. The Magnecors should remove this.

I use the 8.5mm red competition Magnecor leads on my GT6 and TR6. Both sets fitted many years ago and faultless ever since.

However, these red leads have no resistance, so I'm running with Bosch WR78 or NGK BUR6ET resistive multi electrode plugs. And it all works fine. It's a 'fit and forget' option for plug leads.

    Nigel

I remember you sharing so Nigel - I'm sold and will get the KV85 (8.5mm). Just need to know which set is the right one to order?

if you mean the vacuum advance on the dizzy then yes all cars had this

does the fact you have SU fitted mean there is no vac outlet to connect up to the dizzy???

these give with luck around +4mpg  as they are a economy device and maximise advance when at cruising  throttle openings

the vac unit has no effect on performance just fuel consumption

    Pete

I believe there is an outlet (see the red plastic cap covering this (right side SU carb)?

  6. Question for the wise: Did the GT6 come factory equipped with a VCV valve? I'm struggling to explain why my hose connection was capped off (image below). Is there a benefit from deletion or conversely, inclusion?

  7. Was told that the Club shop leads had more resistance than my mechanic would like for my Gt6. After installing the W78 plugs, I'm now keen to replace them with the correct set of Magnecor leads. I'm attached an image of the Magencor UK catalogue for reference - should I purchase the Vitesse set?

    Many thanks in advance!

Agree with Pete - be very very careful on lowering the bonnet. The original SAH rockers were chamfered at each end - see photo - and with a square ended version they may fit the big saloons or Vitesse but be tight in the GT6.

Here’s a side by side from the seller. The tallest point of the Triumphtune cover is level with the lowest point of the SAH. I’m confident it will fit but will be careful

At a guess to identify when/where manufactured. Batch number/factory code.

For example the 2 screw on tops are clearly made from different metals so different batches at least.

    More importantly, do they work.

Will find out in a couple weeks when I put them in! Wasn't easy finding these now obsolete W78s.

I think you mean the aftermarket catch locks that go behind the 'M'-logo bonnet catches and stop them from flipping out? Apologies, I've no idea what size they need but any good hardware shop should be able to supply split pins or suitable clips; I'll keep looking for the details and will update if I find any. I did manage to find a photo, tho... :)

I’m not sure it goes behind the M. Rather, it slides through the two holes on either side of the M, locking it in place and preventing it from flipping out. I’m struggling to find the correct size…

  11. I have a GT6 MK2 in the same Damson colour, also restored. I drive it several times a week in Central London without hesitation. It will always receive the best care, will never see the snow and will always be garaged. That said, I can't think of any Triumph as a garage queen. Just not what they were meant to be.
