  1. Been a while but finally got round to addressing the sender problem. A weekend travelling to and from Goodwood Revival coming up and did not want to embarras myself. The problem was the tang on the sender clashing with a tab on the tank so would not go verically at 12 o clock. Managed to quite easily bend the tang back and forward and break it off. Tbh more simply than i feared. Now inserted correct allignment. Whilst at it removed the large speaker box from behind the rear seat. Tbh it was very well done but prevented my self from sitting correctly as i could not put the rear seat back properly. The previous owner was vertically challenged but im 6ft 3. No radio now but at some point will connect the original single speaker. Can i just connnect the left and right conectors together and then connect the original speaker or is it a bit more awkward than that.? Filled up took for a spin. After an hour or so checked. No leak from sender. But a miss fire did materialise and my lemonade catch bottle for the carb overflows had some petrol.in it. Ripped the float covers off to reveal more of a chunk than a slither of tube. Surprised any fuel was getting to 1 and 2.
  2. That is something i did not test. I was very wary of testing the electrics with fumes from the petrol. Yes i would have turned off before and after but still wary. I am now tempted to remove the sender again. Remove the offending tang & refit vertically. Anybody else had this problem with a new sender?
  3. Thats the 6 million dollar question ? The only way to tell mat be to drive and not top up.
  4. Managed to find a few minutes to change my feul sender today. When you filled up the gauge would only go to 3/4. The idea was to short out the gauge see where it got to and hopefully just replace the sender. first off get to it. The previous owner was a carpenter and had lined the boot in ply and stuck on carper material. All seems good but actually restricts the boot space and the board over the spare to make a floor means packing spares and tools has to be a game of tetris. Unfortunately my feul can i was carrying had sprang a leak and had started to attack the boot floor carpet. Shoered out the gauge and it went straight to full. So sender it would appear to be. Knocked round the old ring and removed the old sender. Tried to put in the new sender with the top pointing upwards . But unfortunately the new sender had a tang on the rear internally which corresponded with a tang on the tank. So the sender could only be fitted at 11 oclock or 1 oclock. I chose 1 oclock. In reality it only moves the sender float vertically by 15mm or so. Why would a new sender have tangs on the back that wont fit with the tank. Bad construction or wrong sender. Just annoys me. The old sender float has a bit of petrol in it but not enough to really alter things to much. The gauge is now reading higher as it would do with the sender in its current position. Ran out of time to pop down the garage to fill up and see if the gauge reads full. So will have to be continued.
  5. Breakfast clubs at Goodwood are free. They charge you an arm and a leg for a bacon roll though . But as the prospective son in law paid that was not a problem. My car did not make it through acceptance to be on display, mainly i was a bit late applying and they have to restrict the more popular marques. I enjoy them and great to use the polystyrene chicane wall as a bar for our coffees whilst taking in the atmosphere. Look on their website for future ones.
  6. The reinforced one is 128mm The unreinfoced is 120mm. Probably not the grh533l.
  7. A bit of a skinflint and did not pay £130 + vat for silicone hoses. But instead ordered a couple of hoses from different suppliers. One again is cheap rubber. The other is reinforced. Hopefully soon sorted.
  8. 20230714_093314.mp4 20230714_093355.mp4 20230714_093437.mp4 A few le Mans cars.
  9. Sat waiting for action to begin. A few photos from earlier and yesterday. One of the highlights of the year. But can.only afford Thursday and Friday. Internet so slow may be Monday before photos load. Live streams on youtube.
  10. On inspection this morning did wonder on the quality of it. But put it down to my ham fisted, ness. It came with a hose set from one of our major suppliers. TBH we are very lucky with the suppliers we have . Very quick delivery on a vast range of parts and panels. But this time probably not up to the job. Just wondering where others have obtained decent hoses from recently.
  11. Hmmm. Was just going to top up with water. Put a nw rubber connector on su overflow and noticed this. I had completely cut through my new top hose by over tightening. Thats my plans for the day down the swanny. 2 new ones ordered from James Paddock. Totally my own fault. Never done that before. The thermostat cover was new as the old was pitted. And it was shiny and i thought the hose was slipping a bit so i tightened with a 7 mm socket. I am an idiot.
  12. Well cleared one noise but created another. Started the day putting things back together after changing the chain and putting thebtensioner in the correct position. First off was to make a water pump gasket as the ordered one had not arrived. The pump i put on was weeping a bit around the gasket that came with it so i took it off and this time added some instant gasket as well. Dont really want to use to much of the stuff but in the right places. Then fitted a 9 inch fan to the rad and then wired in a thermostat. A capillary type one in the top hose. I might duck again now as the position of the stat in the top or bottom hose can be discussed. But as its an auxilliary to only come on when the needle is half way creeping to 3/4's thought that the water coming off the head is the temp i want to know about. And fired her up. The noide from the timing chain has gone. Only to be replaced by the fan. Got to play with the setting a bit to find the right bit. Im sure the printed numbers on it are totally off. Only thing is think the fan bearings are going. It was an old one and when i bench tested it was fine. But as playing with it for a few minutes its beginning to grate. Oh well. Hopefully it should only be emergency. Also fitted yesterday new oil switch as it was tempermental. Now on or off. And a new temp sender. Just to confuse things. Got to fit the overflow pipes back on. Noticed that the rubber was perishing and hopefully a drive to see how the fan operates.
  13. Thanks guys. My intention is to tune the carbs and sort out float levels etc. Just slowly working through doing bits and pieces. Hoping that after tomorrow the noise from the front has gone, should be with a new chain and the tensioner actually tensioning, and that there is adequate cooling no matter how the heats caused.
  14. Thankyou for the timely reminder Johny. About 10 mm on the chain. So possibly on limit as per mr Haynes and as i had a chain and tensioner quickly changed it over. Just using the original marks. All seems fine. Just wish your timely reminder included the oil thrower. That should not be in the ice cream pot with half the bolts in........... Oh well took cover off again. Quite happy with cable tie method of fitting the tensioner. Happy its in right place now. Just quickly double checked timing befor i packed up for the day. And fine. Next job is to refit the water pump i fitted 2 weeks ago. Was weeping a bit around the gasket. Although i dont like sealants it may be required. Whilst the rad etc is off going to fit an electric fan. Nips up to 2&3/4 when pushed and then it has to go slower or lights. Just wantbthat reassurance to cool it a bit more.
  15. Hi. Been keeping my head down for a couple of weeks. Ever sincei mentioned black and white number plates. Caused a bit of response. Did not dare mentioned that i might get ageless number plates from northern ireland. That might have got me castrated. Or that designs such as spitfires and mgbs were ruined by rubber bumpers and big over riders. Or the tr7 had to be a fixed head at first. Good designs ruined by later regulations. Anyway to todays topic. Noise from front of my spit. Timing chain area. Found that the tensioner was totally wrong position and was not tensioning at all. Had marks both sides. Have got new chain seal etc. Just wondering what you guys thought of condition of teeth.? Hoping to get away with new chain and tensioner and use the cable tie method of holding tensioner back.?
  16. In answer to a previous query. Contacted Paintman but there enamel is not 2 pack compatible and so i cant use on the underside of the floor as it will react when the finishing coats overlap. Oh well. Will be following to see how you get on.
  17. Thought my storage problems wew improving and for a period of 8 hours had an empty garage last weekend. My daughter and partner who waS staying with myself whilst their house purchase was completed moved in last friday. Unfortunately that evening they put the dushwasher on to clean it out. The house was empty for a year. It promptly caught fire. 2 engines out and co2 water used. That evening back with me at 2 in morning. Fortunately restricted to kitchen but smell lingers. The brigade were quick. They live on the hampshire wiltshire border and its a race between Fordingbridge and Salisbury crews as to who can get their first. So garage now used as storage again. Electricians and gas engineers been out. Cleaning crew due tomorrow and they intend to try moving in again. See what happens and if i get my garage back. To be continued.
  18. Sorry for butting in but have been following this with interest as intending to self paint my chassis and tub / bulkhead under floor areas before marrying up. My intention would be then to send out for the visible top panels to be painted professionally. Would this Paintman coach enamel be 2 pack compatible.? for areas where the paint systems overlapped.?
  19. Only saw 2 spitfires at the breakfast club this morning. And a very special vitesse. A gew photos of other bits and pieces in attendence.
  20. Ignition now sorted. Thankyou Johny for the advise on the coil voltages. Accuspark installed. New ballast coils and new leads. Did not install new iridium plugs even though i have some. Not sure there compatible and will double check the tip conditions before tuning carbs. Installed a 12v white supply to the electronic distributor and added an inline fuse. The missfire has disapperared and the tacho seems to be behaving itself. A week or so ago had began flushing and added washing soda to the coolant system. This shows up small holes in the top hose. With washing soda seeping through. Theres a rumbling / rattly noise from the front of the engine probably i thought viscous fan, water pump , alternator or timing chain. So i thought as its a keeper might as well change the pump whilst at it. Also fitted a new fan. Getting rid of the viscous one. Whilst at it thought i would double check the thermostat. Big mistake. The housing was held on with silicon. No gasket and thread stripped on a bolt. Fortunatly it was the side where i could put a bolt and nut on through the whole housing. Cut a gasket from some gasket paper that knocking around and put back together. Forgetting the working thermostat. Unbolted and started again. Eventually had a flushed out system two new hoses and a non leaking system hopefully. Also fitted 2 new black and silver number plates. The front one I lowered from just under the bumper where it acted as a shutter to stop the air getting to the radiator and installed on the lower spoiler. Must admit that i do like the black and silver plates. Really fitting of an older car. Also fitted the radiator valences that came in the boot and a non standard lemonade bottle to the carb overflows. Did the same with my previous Tr7. Get a smell of petrol which tbh i enjoy, but also suspect the needle valves might be sticking. Will check the bottle after runs. Now put over 250 miles on it in the few weeks I,ve had it which is more than the previous owner in the past 4 years. First major trip out will be to the Goodwood Members breakfast meeting which will be a 100 mile round trip in 26.c temp. At present my temp gauge reads from half and and uo to 3/4 when pushed hard butnthen held up in traffic for 10 mins. I know it subjective and depends on individual guages and senders calibration, but what do others read on their temp gauges when pootling on back roads and then when pushed. ? To be continued.
  21. Thank you loads. So may be all ok. Thank you.
