  1. Bet you wish you still had the 2002 tii, I miss my e21 323i fitted with a 2.8 lump.

    Ive also had an e30. 3x e46 330’s

Was  considering a Z3/4 the other week, think I’m on the wrong forum 😂

    Apologies for going off topic!

  2. At the moment I have only placed an advert here  in the classified section, but will certainly mention the Tssc to any potential owner if advertised elsewhere.

No I’m not looking for another classic car, think that’s run its course.
I might return to motorbikes if anything.

Dare I say I’m quite passionate about my 2005 e46 300d Touring…….I’ll get my coat.

  3. Unfortunately due to lost enthusiasm, I am considering selling my Vitesse mk2 saloon , has 5 speed, CV driveshafts. Needs tidying, will list in classifieds in near future.

  4. Thanks for your reply Pete, I’ll see if I can get this checked. All this computer stuff is beyond me, how I ‘ve managed to survive so far is a miracle!

I dread to think what I’m going to do when the facial recognition system misbehaves and I can’t get through the front door into my own home one day!

  5. Finally got around to taking the car out yesterday and trying the @Wagger method with engine off coasting downhill.

Before I set off I depressed the brakes numerous times to empty servo. (Brought back early memories of sitting in heavy downhill holiday traffic in Cornwall in my Corsair, coasting slowly with engine off, was ok until the servo emptied….. oh #%ck!! rock hard pedal and useless brakes. Not to be repeated !)

So back to the Vitesse, if I managed to empty the servo successfully, the brakes still felt effective during that little test,

i won’t be looking to remove the servo anytime soon, especially as I have been buying lots of bits and pieces for the car with the intention to do those future jobs, trouble is, finding bits is easy finding the motivation to start is harder! 🫤

What to do going forward remains unclear at the moment 🤦🏼‍♂️

Vitesses did not have a servo. Just find a quiet downhill slope and try it without the engine running. That will be what it is like without a servo. Compared with the early Heralds with drum brakes all round, they were perfectly adequate.

I had a 1600/6 with the smaller discs. That stopped really well. However, it had asbestos loaded pads!

    Thanks for your replies,

@Waggerl like your simple suggestion regards to rolling down the hill with engine off -  not short of hills here!

Pleased I don’t have the steering lock/ignition version 🙂 I’ll be keen to try this  experiment out whenever possible and let you know. (Need to recover from an ankle sprain first)

  7. Hi all,

I’m curious to know how the Vitesse drives or should I say stop, should I wish to remove the brake servo.*

I understand Servos were not fitted as standard.

As an experiment, if I were to disconnect the servo vacuum hose and block it off, and do a trial road test, would that give me a true representation and feel as a non servo car, or would the hydraulic pipe work currently connected give a false comparison.

*Only thinking it would be nice to de clutter the engine bay.

Although the road test could decide otherwise.

Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

  8. Hello All,

I bought this 1969 Vitesse back in September 2023.

It has some more recent upgrades made to it prior to my purchase namely a new 5 speed type 9 gearbox and CV driveshafts.

Looking through its history folder i can trace the names of previous owners back to 1988.

From previous for sale adverts it mentions the car made it into The 1984 June edition of The Courier magazine, that made me think is it possible to find a copy and what would it include? So I googled it, and to my amazement found the contents available to view from the Courier magazine in all its glory, shame no glamour shots of the car to be found.

I think it’s great when people keep records of their once pride and joy to pass on to new owners.

    Hope you enjoy Steve

This is what I used on my Vitesse replicating the original insulation. I attached the insulation inside the tunnel cover with contact adhesive and home made staple/ clips through thefibreglass cover so no chance it could drop down and melt on the exhaust, somthing to bear in mind.

    Photo bottom of thread.

    Hi

Slightly off topic but thank you @Mark B for the sideways link 👍 It’s new to me, and looks a great forum for the race enthusiasts together with modified stuff, have only spent a short time on it, but I’m not getting much done at this rate!

    Cheers.

  10. Dear Santa,

l know you are busy this time of year, I have a sliding roof currently fitted to my Vitesse that needs recovering, however as another option l wondered if you or any of you helpers may have a nice saloon roof  that I could possibly fit as a replacement?

I realise it’s a large item and may not fit in your sack, but my son in-law has a van and maybe able to help out.

I know you don’t normally expect payment Santa but I could make a small contribution if it helps.

    Best wishes and take care.....hic

  11. Wasn’t running that even, but as timing wasn’t set plus plug issue was new.

New HT lead fitted to no.1 and timing marks visible again 👍🏻

Idle a little uneven ,maybe the result of the cam that’s fitted as PO pointed out.

Revs cleanly, didn’t take it out for a road test tho, salt on the roads plus a snow covering here this morning!

  12. Hi

Sorry to re ignite this thread, pun intended 😏

Following on from earlier posts I discovered the position of my dizzy was incorrect, the vacuum advance unit being too close to the block. Especially compared to photo provided by @Ian Foster

So, after checking tappet adjustment, I went about correcting the dizzy position.

Firstly I connected strobe to no.1 ht lead to check timing as a reference before commencing work, all seemed well.

Secondly, I manually turned pulley to tdc position. No.1 cylinder on compression, rockers 1&2 closed.

Thirdly I removed dizzy checked drive gear orientation.IMG_3451.thumb.jpeg.8e76d44ea91af6704bb1040a4a9a3abf.jpeg

I then re set drive gear slot as shown by @JohnD photo.

Re assembled everything, rotar arm now in six o’clock position.

Started engine with strobe connected as before, painted timing marks no longer visible!  after a bit of head scratching I connected strobe to no. 6 ht lead and bingo timing marks re appear.

I’m a bit stumped why this has happened.

    Any ideas? TIA

  13. @micmakLittle did I know that all the fuel in the tank would puke all over the place, but I managed to get a piece of hose on to the line and stop the hemorrhaging. I lost lots of fuel onto the chassis and onto the floor of the garage.

When micmak disconnected the fuel pipe from the fuel filter, as mentioned above.

    Sorry to butt in,

What method do you suggest to prevent fuel spillage when disconnecting fuel filters?

Would using a plastic bag between fuel filler cap and filler neck create a vacuum and stop any fuel flow?

I plan to change my in-line fuel filter at some stage.

    TIA

  14. Trigolf

Well spotted re spring locations, I didn’t spot that.

I didn’t disturb the brakes purely a visual check, albeit not that good 🤦🏼‍♂️.

Appreciate your help with driveshaft issue.

I’ll tackle issues again when time and motivation returns, probably in the spring sorry about the pun. 🤦🏼‍♂️

there is a recent post about failed CV shafts and wheels/hubs shearing

CV  on a rotoflex twin brg hub should be fine ,but on a swing axle with only one bearing its limited design can fail easy as some have found the hard way

its common that Must Haves and bright idea's often make a good headache    but dont let that stop you

    Pete

Paracetamol are fast becoming an addition to my  5 a day 🫤

With my limited knowledge of the Vitesse, and understanding their differences, and quirkyness.

    mk1’s have swing springs?

    mk2’s have swing axles?

I may even have that completely wrong 🤷‍♂️

While I inspected both rear brake linings, all appeared in good condition.

    IMG_3354.thumb.jpeg.d8786e909c512f1d6c3abe44c8f7deab.jpeg

However determining good brake adjustment wasn’t easy, when rotating the driveshafts there’s definitely a heavy drag felt (even with drums removed).*

I’m not sure how long ago the CV shafts were fitted but understand have covered little mileage.

The PO did say he felt the nsr wheel bearing needed attention.

in my ignorance I dismissed that as an easy fix, but now realise it could be a bit more involved.

    * Is a heavy drag normal? I’m thinking not, but worth the ask.

    TIA

A Vitesse is a very different 'Animal' from a MM or 105E Anglia, Much more nose heavy and the rear suspension makes for very different handling from what you may be used to. I have a Mk1 with a 2500TC engine and I will never use full power on 'Take off' having seen pictures of sheared drive shafts on this forum.

Very true, if CV driveshafts were fitted would that eliminate the sheared driveshaft threat? Just curious.

  17. JD That’s useful to know, according to this chart, double valve springs should have been fitted too.

I’m expecting I may have to readjust them if I find them overly noisy - following my first attempt. 🤞

Hot it is then, many thanks.image.thumb.png.4b7eb8013def96875b8cd799875cbf8e.png
