Am I right in thinking that in the early days of alternators you had to disconnect the alternator when welding to avoid damage to the diodes in it? Or is it dynamo fitted? Just a thought.

i always where possible disconnect the battery , working fine

Surely it can't be a carb or fuel problem as with a single carb all four cylinders would be effected. It must, and I use that word cautiously, be an electrical fault on 3 and 4 only. Try swapping leads and plugs?

    Iain

been on it a couple of hours now swapped leads around changed leads cleaned plugs swopped around cleaned points swopped coil for a known one , has no ballast running a 12v coil so i thought would try and bypass the ignition switch in doing so the engine starts fine but shuts off dead after a few seconds , so back to running from switch ,if left running for around 15 min the engine will just shut off dead  got to be electrical  my thinking but what. does take a couple of cranks to start again though , thinking as you said can not be carb what next though , just to add engine does not overheat starts on the button from cold little choke although only running on 2 pots

  3. just a thought could the diaphragm cause a problem if has a small hole to be honest all the years i have owned triumphs never had one fail so not sure of symptoms . spoken to owner said was topping up dash pot a lot lately ?

  4. have the air filter off do you think it could be carb related number 3 and 4 not firing not come across this before strange it was running badly on 4 at one point , not even my car a favour job now my problem paul

  5. well not going well , started on the button from cold choke in running like on 3 again , blew fuel lines through checked have a good fuel supply all good . so then started the car removed each lead all made the engine note change the back as i touched the lead back onto the plug so seemed all good , coffee time so indoors 30 minutes went back out restarted even worse than before now not running on 3and 4 , took plugs out dry leads ok . suppose next compression test not making sense though drove on the ramp fine was driving well . forgot to mention its a 1300 engine on a single stromberg 150 , thoughts please paul

  6. strange one reversed spitfire up onto ramps to do a bit of welding shot up no problem.  following 1 week started it yesterday started first time but runs like a bag of old nails seems to be on 3 cylinders strange as only opend the bonnet to disconnect the battery . done all the usual checks plugs leads ect . only thing i can think of is muck in the carb was a bit low on fuel , thoughts please paul

Wonder if the attached diagram might provide some illumination. Assuming you currently have an ACR series alternator then the pin-outs would be one of the three illustrated. I hadn't noticed before that while the ACR standard connections had an earth lead to earth the Euro connection didn't. So (obviously) if using a Euro connector the earth would not be used.

thank you that helps a lot paul

I suggest that you study the wiring diagram for a model fitted with the single plug alternator; both large spade terminals connected directly to the battery +ve and the smaller spade terminal connected to the warning lamp (which must not be an LED).  The wiring diagram suggests in theory it should be quite easy but in practice??

will do was hoping was going to be a simple case of joining wires paul

  9. done a check on fuses all ok . cleaned the terminals on the fuse box still the same, noticed a broken terminal on the solenoid found one in the shed but slightly different layout, so have 2 white wires which if i connect the engine will not turn off with the key have tried different positions then nothing when i turn the key .have left disconnected starts on key turns off on key thinking the 2 white wires could be the problem .waiting for a workshop manual can the go through the wiring diagram

  10. hi just purchased a 1975 viva  , advice please . came with a flat battery so charged up today car fired straight up runs well , the problem i have is no dash display , no warning lights no wipers no indicators . working lights horn temp fuel gauge, put tester on battery not charging has a alternator fitted checked fuses not blown . not sure where to start could it be a earth problem paul

of course it matters, It is fraud however you look at it

i agree but it went on a lot , you used to see 1972 v5 with chassis plate for sale all the time who knows how many classics are not quite what they should be a lot for sure paul

  12. have fitted before over the years no problem , so yesterday remove points ect  fitted new powerspark just spun over no hint of firing had the distributor  slightly unbolted so gave it a slight turn advance and retard still no intention of firing .so points back on fired straight up .i contacted the supplier by email no contact number the answer was its a easy fix did not say what though, still waiting a reply think i will stay with the points system, any one had problems with this product paul .
