Hello I've just discovered a small oil leak coming from the rear of the overdrive where the prop shaft connects to the output shaft. Is this simple fix or is the oil seal internal?
Many thanks

Many thanks Clive, I'm thinking of replacing the centre one first to support the body before I do the front and rear. That way I can get the end bar on and use as a guide also after bolting to the body.

Hello all,
After some serious thought (and a failed MOT) I've decided to replace all 6 outriggers and the outside bar that they bolt to. I've ordered the parts of James paddock but was wondering of the best way to tackle the job.
I'm going to do one side at a time (body on), would it be ok to cut off all three outriggers from the chassis and then weld on the new ones? I'm just thinking that the body may sag and would I need to support it ?
I've only had the car 4 months and it's all running fine and everything works apart from the bodged chassis which I want to get right.
Any top tips/info greatly appreciated, lining up bolts or what part to fit first etc.
Kind regards
Rich

Many thanks Paul, the cars lovely even though it needs some work underneath but it's not too bad. I want to do loads to it (get rid of some bubbling paint etc) but I suppose they are all long term projects.
I read the manual earlier, went out adjusted it and packed with grease, job done . Steering is a lot smoother and not notchy. I think the nut was just bolted on too tight.

Many thanks for your replies, and the workshop manual which will help me so much as I currently only have a Haynes . Does the body need to come off to replace the outriggers?
Thanks

Hello, after submitting my Mk1 Vitesse for an MOT it failed for the following;
- Chassis outriggers have poor repairs/rot
- Rear wheel bearing rumbles - will try and put in some grease through the nipple
- Steering tight and lumpy - no idea
It not as bad as I thought after I spent so much time getting it all working but I neglected to look underneath in detail .
I'm in the Salisbury area and rather new to the Triumph scene (4 weeks now) and was wondering does anyone know a good mechanic/restorers who will repair/replace the outriggers. I have heard of a company in Westbury (Classics and Retro) who could do the outriggers just wondering what would be a 'rough' price to get the job completed.
Any top tips greatly received in regards to the rear wheel bearing, tight steering and chassis.
Kind regards

Roger, was it a pain to do the rear wheel bearings? mine has failed the MOT due to it feeling lumpy and rumbling so im going to put it with grease first then if that does work replace both sides.
thanks in advance

Good Afternoon,
Im after some advice in regards to my Mk 1 Vitesse starting off the ignition switch. If ive left the car for a night, when i turn the key it wont engage the starter. Even if ive got the lights on they dont even dim.
When i start it off the solenoid she fires up straight away. Once she fires up from the solenoid she starts fine from the ignition switch all day. Im thinking the solenoid sticking as ive just fitted a new ignition switch
If it is the solenoid is there any top tips to get it lubricated/unstuck?
Kind Regards

Thank you all for your help and advice. The reverse is left and up so i'd better take care of the box, at least it has overdrive which helps considerably.
all the best

Many thanks Robin and Casper, so for spares I should just go down the 2500 route? Was the 2500pi the injection engine? I suppose it was and they done away with the injection and put on the SU HS 6 carbs?
It has got over drive makes me think that it may have all the running gear
Once again thanks for your help

Could just jump in to this topic, Ive had my MK 1 Vitesse a few months now and when i brought it the owner stated the car had a Triumph 2.5 straight 6. Ive looked at the engine and it does have 2 x SU6's, gearbox has overdrive but the engine numbers are MG3970HEBW!
Could anyone shed some light please? It all runs perfect and sounds awesome but i would like to get a new rocker cover etc but not sure what engine it is ;-)
It also has a blocked off hole/vent/sender mount near the rear by the bulk head just below the rocker cover(cant seem to load up pics)
Your help is great appreciated

Apologies for a 'possible' daft question but do the seats in a Vitesse convertible MK 1 go in either way (i.e. drivers can be swooped for the passengers etc). Reason I ask is that I've taken them out to refit the carpet and now they seem to foul the doors when closing. They do look slightly different on one side compared to the other but that may just be me.
Many thanks

Hello all,
I've just brought a new front side light but it's not as 'deep' as the original. It fits fine for length and height but the piece of metal that divides the indicator to the side light looks like it needs to be cut back to enable the new one to fit.
Before I begin cutting has anyone else experienced this?

Hello,
New to all this found madness - i've just flushed my vitesse heater matrix and loads of crud came out. My question is when I put the heater valve back it only seems to 'push' back onto the heater hose inlet (on the heater matrix) is this normal of should there be some sort of clamp?
Also there was no temperature thermostat in the housing on the engine, should I get another or is this a normal 'modification'?
Great posts and help, many thanks for helping a newbie classic car owner ;-)
P.S sorry the car is a vitesse mk1 with smiths heater.
Kind regards
Brake filler cap hole
in Braking System
Posted
Hello ive just noticed that my brake filler cap has a small hole right in the middle of it. It looks like its manufactured that way but i'd rather know before i block it off etc. The car is a triumph vitesse mk1.
Thanks in adavance
