Starter jam - only when engine cold

Hi all,

this is a Sprint engine with the pre-engaged starter - got the car 2 years ago and occasionally the starter would stick without turning the engine; usually ok if doing the usual rocking to and fro in gear. Never had a problem once warmed up and still fine.

Now it needs attention as it rarely turns on a cold engine and rocking doesnt always work - lucky the garage has a long slope outside !!.

I suspect a solenoid contact issue, hoping not ring gear  ..  anyone got experience of similar problems & solution ?

a good clean sounds a plan  ,  the pre engaged can suffer from build up of crud on the spindle the pinion has to fly up

 

or corrosion in the piggy back solenoid

OK thanks Pete. Its gotta come out one way or the other so hope a good clean up will do the job.
