  1. Hi all, My issue is similar to the one recently posted by Brian Burton so apologies for posting similar but didnt want to hijack that thread as my problem continues past that of Brian's which I read with interest. BACKGROUND: I'm working on the early stages of a renovation of a 1965, 1147 convertible Herald which had been stood up for eight years or so before I got her. I have got her running, reliably now, refurbished brake system so am ready to attempt moving under her own steam. PROBLEM: Clutch appears stuck (as probably predicted after such a long period) with symptoms as follows: - Gears can be selected without engine running - Gears cannot easily be selected with clutch depressed however, will select with crunching and grinding - When in gear with engine running (jacked up) drive shaft and wheels will turn but continue too even if clutch is depressed RECTIFICATION ACTIONS SO FAR: Having read other posts etc, I figured the drive plate may be suck to the flywheel so took the many ideas that others have tried (and found to be successful) as follows: - When jacked up, warmed the engine up, ran the car in gear with clutch depressed, revved high and then braked which I attempted several times to no avail - Rocked the car back and forward whilst in gear and clutch depressed - Bled hydraulics and tested for leaks - Removed, cleaned and tested slave unit and replaced rubbers - As none of the above worked, I removed the gearbox and clutch to find that the flywheel did have rust residue resembling what it may look like had it been stuck to the drive plate. I have cleaned up the flywheel, tested all mechanical links etc and replaced. SUMMARY: Unfortunately, after reassembling etc I still have exactly the same fault. It may be worth mentioning that although I'm reasonably mechanically able, this is the first time I have ever inspected a clutch system so have no experience of what good would look like or what bad would look like. I am now thinking I should maybe replace the release bearing and will probably replace the clutch (although I know the clutch alone would not fix my issue) next time I'm in there as in essence, the clutch looks to be a relatively simple mechanical system to me so I am a little stumped. Any thoughts, tips or assistance would be very much appreciated and I am also aware that some less mechanically minded approaches have taken place on this car before and have learnt not to ignore the obvious. with that thought in mind, there are a couple of other questions as well: 1: I have looked at clutch supplies and the outer covers available all have 5 spring wholes whereas the one fitted has 9, s that correct? see pic attached 2: In the mechanical manual, a return mechanism and spring assembly is shown for this type of clutch. Although non of the pics I have looked at show the return spring, the housing does have a hole just next to the slave aperture, should there be a return spring fitting there? Apologies for the long post and thank you so much in advance for any time and assistance you can offer. Best regards Gary
  2. Thanks Casper and thanks Steve, I am going to take a good look tomorrow but looking at the condition I am thinking of a coupe of fly leads as well and as I now know you have had some success with that, I can proceed with confidence if required All the best Gary
  3. Tanks guys Its the smaller flat lens Juppy (pic attached) single bulb I think? Thanks Casper, having some experience I had suspected earthing so I appreciate the confirmation and explanation, I'm guessing its a single bulb double filament arrangement? I will get involved over the weekend but had a quick look to find I have one loom to the front side/indicator, Green and Red wires so am guessing they are earthing through the screws as you have indicated Casper, that I think, will be my problem, plenty of the rust stuff down there. Many thanks both Regards Gary
  4. Hi all Unfortunately, time hasn't allowed me to get to any events where I would have been able to check this out so any advise would be appreciated. Can anybody advise on how the indicators & side lights interact/work on 1965 Herald? I've not got to the electrics yet (big project) but plan to have a good look this week and had noticed previously that the side lights come on and if the indicator is applied, the rear indicators flash and the front sides change from static to flashing. I'm OK with electrics so really just need an understanding of how they should work (as I'm guessing his isnt correct) if anybody could advise that would be great. Many thanks Gary
  5. Pondering on who may have a set of front caliper type 12 refurb exchange units in stock for 1200 Herald? on back order with Rimmer's but holding the project momentum up!

  6. All good, After 8 years stood up, she is ticking over nicely now. Very inspiring to crack on with the rest of the project. Thanks again chaps, I'm sure I will be back for more tips if/when I get stuck. Regards Gary
  7. Many thanks Richard Clive and Pete I have taken the pump off, checked Valves etc which seem fine as I've recently replaced them and the diaphragm is good. I have however found that screw holding the top dome on has lost some thread and therefore not holding pressure so I will replace that. Hopefully, with that done and Richards method of placing the pump back I will be good to go. Thank you for the assistance. Gary
  8. Hi Richard That's most useful thank you, I will re-fit and keep that in mind tomorrow. I have also realised a possible school boy error this evening which may be effecting by fuel pull through, I am working on many areas of the car at the moment and as the fuel tank has not been in the car whilst I refurbished it, I had temporarily fitted a cap which I don't think is vented! This may explain why it worked for start up and then died and also why the prime lever worked initially but not later. Many thanks for the tip, much appreciated. Best regards Gary
  9. Hi there, new member and new to restoration Having refurbished the fuel pump on a herald 1200 1965 I have reinstalled it but after the car initially starting and running, the pump stopped delivering fuel. Is it easy to not get the pump armature aligned with the cam? I will jump on it again tomorrow but I wondered if this should be a relatively simple task or if it requires some tinkering to get it right.Any little tips most welcome. Many thanks,Gary
