  1. Thanks guys I have purchased some from ANG Classic parts (not tried them before) £5.67 each but much much better quality than the lesser priced Rimmer option. They have gone in well and seem to be a good fit all-round. Test drive tonight!!!! Regars Gary
  2. Thanks Andrew, I wonder if they can still be purchased! I would have further investigated but have now gone down the long routed avenue and replaced the pump housing etc (luckily had a free of charge spare given to me). Appreciate the additional information for future reference. All the best to you Gary
  3. Thanks Pete, I think I should have hit the forum before undertaking what I thought would be a simple job, that's classics eh! Regards Gary
  4. Thanks Paul, I will give them a go. Regards Gary
  5. Dam Dam Dam!!!!! Didn't think about leaving them in Pete, that would have supported the poorer new ones too! Just ordered some more so will have another go but slightly frustrating for just a little tiny wiggle on the steering!! Regards Gary
  6. Luvin the new look and improvements, thumbs up
  7. Hi all Has anybody found any decent steering column bushes on the market? Having just had the battle of a life time removing the old (for MOT advisory on the top one), fitting the new ones has also proved a challenge only to find the side tabs broken whilst fitting and frankly, I've little confidence that the plastic inserts staying in place for long, once I've managed to get them in!! Such a shame to remove such a good quality OEM part (albeit, very 'slightly' warn) and have to replace with a 'nasty' part I got the replacements from Rimmer's and understand there is one main producer of this type for most suppliers but wondered if anybody has found a better quality replacement? Thank you. Gary
  8. Hi Andrew I'm glad I'm not the only one, I'm not sure either, my thoughts were exactly the same as yours, ''not sure what to make of it''!! as a Herald owner (early restoration) I thought it may have been a useful watch but not to be. I may give the show another chance this week. Gary
  9. Problem solved The spare pump housing works a treat once cleaned up (a bit of luck having that lying around), engine warms up much quicker now that it has a thermostat, as expected. Also have a spare sensor hole if I come to need an electric fan now. I do have a problem with water loss now though so am getting some temperature rises on a run, is it right that a bad fitting rad cap can cause issues? I seem to have pressure leaking out of the cap which makes a sound similar to a stuck horn and the only place I can see water coming out is the overflow pipe? Any thoughts? Many thanks Gary
  10. Thanks John, I will check them both for costings tomorrow. Much appreciated. Gary
  11. Many thanks Paul and Clive, I will weigh up the two options so far, find the most cost effective way. Regards Gary
  12. Hi guys 'IF' one was to break the cable/pipe on the mechanical Smiths temperature gauge sender unit, would one be in the proverbial?!!! It dousnt look like a replaceable or repairable part but has anybody had any experience or am I the only idiot Thank you and yes, very bruised from the self kicking!!!!!!! Gary
  13. Thanks Colin That's another option as until your post, I wasn't sure about the electric sender option! Also, I wondered why the later pump housing had two tapped threads so thanks for clearing that up for me, with the electric fan output as well, may be worth me installing the later housing as I have one and if it all comes off reasonably easy (after Pete's warning of shearing!) Many thanks Gary
  14. Thanks Pete I did wonder if that might be a risk, hopefully I will have a bit of luck with that, thanks for the heads-up. Yep, baking soda and toothy brushy it is. Thanks again Gary
  15. Ha Ha, thanks Pete, funny you should say that, I only threw a toothbrush away this morning so have retrieved it from the bin!! I'm wondering, just for interest, if the blank you speak of is where my heater pipe is attached? Many thanks for the cleaning tips,I think that's the way I will go, most cost effective as i'm lucky enough to have the other housing, fingers crossed its ok! Thanks for the help
  16. Thanks Pete, I have these two but not sure if either are in the correct location? I'm thinking the one under the manifold is too low, the other is nearside rear, would that be any good? Also, I may have had a bit of luck as a few months back a friendly fellow Herald owner gave me a few old spares, lo-and-behold, I have a later pump housing which is tapped at the top. It dousnt look like too much of a job so if these taps arnt any good, that may be my best option if the sender fits. Any tips on cleaning the dried up crud in the replacement housing? anything I could soak it in? Many thanks Gary
  17. Thanks Clive, ah, I see, I wondered how it could work with that length of probe, that explains how others work! I think I will try and stick with the Capillary if I can, although the easiest option appears to be to install an electric one!! Many thanks, much appreciated. Gary
  18. Hi all I have just gone to replace the thermostat on the 1147 1965 Herald, firstly I found there isn't one fitted, so, fitted one to very quickly find out why there wasn't one fitted!! I now understand that the early 1200's didn't have a temperature gauge installed so this one has had a modified thermostat housing installed with a temp sender unit in the top, trouble is, the gauge intrudes so much that the housing wont go back on with a thermostat in there! Anybody had a similar issue? I'm wondering if there is anywhere I can get a shorter gauge to fit or alternatively, if I install a standard housing, would I have to install a later water pump housing to get a gauge on or is there any other way? As always, many thanks in advance for any advise. Regards Gary
  19. Many thanks guys All fixed and running better than previously. Thanks Pete, I think your diagnosis and reasons behind it were bang on, by the way she ran tonight I recon the badly made rotor has also been causing some lumpy running, backfire etc. Great support thank you. Gary
  20. Thanks guys Thanks Stuart, I looked at that and made sure it was tight in, took it out and cleaned then popped it back, glad to hear mine isn't the only one slightly screw driver damaged!! Got that Clive and Pete, I will be jumping back on the issue Monday evening with the spare parts and the checks above, will keep you posted. Thanks for all the support. Gary
  21. Thanks Pete Well, that makes a whole lot of sense but as always, I have everything spare apart from the part I need, no condenser!! I cant get hold of one until Monday but I did get a new 'decent' rotor which when compared to the one on the car, backed up your comments about quality for sure, loose fitting body and very loose contact plate so you may well have hit my problem on the head. I will let you know on Monday but thank you and Clive for the tips as I would have probably ended up getting myself into all sorts of Carb work and problems this weekend Many thanks Gary
  22. Thanks Clive, do you know what, it was when I initially had the tick-over issue but Im not sure that it was on checking last night! I will check this afternoon but if it isnt, would that be a vacuum issue? Thanks for the tip. Gary
  23. Thanks Pete I did clean the slow running jet which did have a little dirt in it, after that and other things the idling fixed. Thanks for the condenser tip, I think I have a spare so will try that. Many thanks Gary
  24. Hi guys A few tips if you don't mind as I'm sure some of you must have had the issue! LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND: 1147 Herald which I got back on the road 500 miles ago has been running perfectly as I have gradually increased the distances, speeds and time of trips. slightly longer trip last week on the M way so higher speeds than normal and a longer trip, all went well, nice smooth running. ISSUE: Once off the motorway, car started stalling when pulling up so no tick-over every time I pulled up. After a couple of roadside stops and some tinkering with the volume adjuster and tick-over screw, all was back to normal and the trip back was as smooth as the one out. I have taken the car out this week and instantly, the tick-over issue has returned and the car running generally rough. ACTIONS SO FAR Checked compression's, all good Re-adjusted the tick-over and volume adjusters Replaced soiled fuel filter Replaced (very soiled) air filter (which also smelt very fuel rich) Adjusted timing which appeared to be slightly out Removed & cleaned carb mixture jet Checked points gap Checked plugs gaps (rich deposits on plugs) CURRENT SITUATION: Tick-over now good when warmed up and choke pushed full in ISSUE: Car is now very under-powered compared to previously, particularly at the higher speed end, 50mph, doesn't want to go any higher with foot flat to the floor and it was slow getting to that point. OBSERVATIONS: Some back-firing and carb popping when accelerating and slowing Temperature good and stead Oil pressure good Vacuum same as previously was NEXT STEPS: Any thoughts welcome guys and gals but do you think I'm right to be looking at: Carburettor Fuel delivery Re-looking at the timing Like I say, any assistance, thoughts, ideas very much welcome. All the best Gary
