    Engine swap

Ok hoping someone can help out here .so I have a 1976 spitfire 1500 engine had loss of compression so rather than spend tons getting new pistons rings etc I got another engine So turns out the old engine wasn't a 1500 but a mk 4 1300 .now I did get the old engine cylinder head stripped and rebuilt before we had discovered the bores had problems now the 1500 engine now may have problems with the cylinder head. So the question is can I put a 1300 rebuilt head onto the 1500 block .any help would be greatlyappreciated many thanks for looking regards Paul
  3. I gather that the torque settings would be different on a 1300 cylinder head as the manual i have is for a 1500
  4. Well i dont have the car here its at the garage getting the proper payen head gasket fitting but hopefully get it back before Saturday. So whats this tab look like what should it read ?
  5. Hi sorry typing error meant FH61654HE regards Paul
  6. Well im hoping someone on the forums can help out with this question. I bought a 1976 Spitfire 1500 this time last year been driving it about and all was well then had a problem with the head gasket so ordered a new gasket and seal set for the whole engine got it stripped and rebuilt in my work.so took it to a car show car seemed ok .then a week or two later head gasket is away again my mate put it down to a faulty gasket could happen so .ok order a new one get it replaced and again drove it home seems ok then car is struggling to pull away losing power.so i look at engine number on advise from a guy who has a spitfire and its not a 1500 engine but a mk 4 1300 ? There is no mention of this on the paperwork and guy i got it from knows nothing about this.so perhapd someone on here knows the reason for the engine swap .the reg number is NNS528P was first registered on 1st of March 1976 engine number is FN61654HE Thanks for looking Paul
  7. Nice to have another scot on here ?im from Glasgow and i have a 76 1500 getting some engine work done hopefully next week and geg it back on the road im not the type to hide my car away in the winter as long asits dry and no ice on the roads I will take her out for a spin even if it's just to local shops lol anyway welcome and hopefully we will meet up at a future date
  8. Do you need to watch out for oil spurting about if i run engine on tick over without rocker cover ?and what sort of things would i be looking for with cover off thanks for all your help
  9. Hi rather stupidly i allowed my son-inlaw to drive my 1976 spitfire he over revved the engine even though i told him to make sure he didnt what a moron .anyway after him driving if that what you call wrecking a car the engine was making a hell of a racket seems to be coming from top at rocker cover took this off but saw nothing out of place so has anyone else had this problem with over revving and then a sort of clanking noise sounds like a tractor on a bad day any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking regards Paul
  10. Update i took the car and then when temp gauge was reading hot stopped and disconnected sender it rapidly went down to cold so once again pete you were correct thanks so is it possible to buy a new sensor on its own ?
  11. Update changed over to a new thermostat and gasket but temp gauge still runs up to the H the engine is hot the radiator top sides and bottom are hot both top and bottom hoses are hot so any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks for looking
  12. Yeah it's £7.45 for a thermostat and new gasket and once I take off housing to check thermostat makes sense to just get a new one and if it doesn't Solve problemat least I have a new thermostat and gasket.see what happens can't work on car this weekend so will look at it on Tuesday
  13. No the temp goes up from cold to hot but takes about 10 minutes also engine is hot but hose is warm that is why im thinking thermostat.
  14. Update i tightened up the clamp on the hose leading from the thermostat housing to the top of radiator. Car no longer leaking but it is still running hot after only about a ten minute drive the dash thermometer needle was right on the H .so im thinking the thermostat is faulty ? But if any one has another suggestion let me know thanks for looking
  15. Quick question i have just got a 76 spitfire really nice condition got a new MOT and took it out today for a wee drive got to a car park and was showing a guy the car lifted bonnet and notice water dripping from the little rubber pipe running from top of engine to radiator also saw that temperature gauge in car was at the H .now car was running ok on the drive including a short way on the motorway. So is it just a case of tightening up the clamp as it does appear to be dripping out at the point where the clamp is and will also will refill radiator with coolant .or is it maybe require further investigation. Thanks for looking regards Paul
  16. And to add propshaft moves a little half turn thats it when i put car in gear
  17. It did lurch forward with slave off. if i have to now remove gearbox then im afraid i am way out of my depth and will need to get car to a qualified mechanic as i dont have the knowledge or equipment to take on the gearbox
  18. The situation is the same car will go into gear move ever so slighty then nothing i have a firm pedal just as in my every day car but i can lift foot off clutch pedal and car wont stall out so if i need to take off slave cylinder and try again i will but what will that tell me ?
  19. So i think I have found the vertical hole screw driver only goes in a couple of mm so pin is in situ. So pin is ok slave cylinder has been change for a new one master cylinder has been stripped cleaned and new seals so where do i look next
  20. Yes was slight resistance when pushing on the slave cylinder i gather that is suppose to.so if im correct the pushrod should be connected with the pinatone end and if not it would be loose ?
  21. As for the pivot pin if some kind person could show a the correct postion of this on a picture as even the manual isnt very clear or I'm just to dumb to see it lol
  22. Update have changed over slave cylinder and stripped and new seals on master cylinder bled the system and its still not going into drive. Cant understand why it will still go to move forward if i start car in gear so it must be hydraulics right ?
  23. You are a wealth of knowledge Pete thanks to you and good sound advice i might get the car on the road before the end of summer
  24. Ok well i took off slave cylinder removed HT lead put car in first gear and it jump forward like you said it might so thanks for the advice Pete so if i order up a new slave cylinder that hopefully will solve the problem. ?
  25. Quick question the slave cylinder when you push on the small rubber piston inside of it should it spring back up the reason i ask is mine kinda of stays down unless you tap the bottom then it pops back up .I had thought it might not pop back unless it had the pressure from the hydraulic fluid. Just on the off chance that this is a the problem then i can order up a new one .thanks for looking regards Paul
