Hi, I've unearthed some oil that's 25 years old. Some unopened some opened. Would it be safe to use or should it go for disposal?

Pad plates?

Hi Gully,
No. See the attached image highlighting the subject of the question. Hopefully I've got the image attached.

Adrian,
You've got that bonnet looking good, I hope I can get somewhere near with mine. Are you using a compressor or cans? Also, in your 4th pic. the lateral strengthening bar - what are the two oblong box sections (just inboard of the wheel arch supports) with the threaded captive nuts on the inside for?
Clive,
Thanks for the response/advice. The paint stripper I use is Strip Away Pro which I find excellent.

The last panel I have to deal with is the near side lower wing. It's not original and still has the part label on it - 909663 DEC 85. It hasn't got underseal on it but some sort of waxoil type coating. When I take the coating off the finish is black and obviously the original panel inner finish and it's in excellent condition. Can anyone please tell me what this coating is as it's impervious to paint stripper and also can I, after I've cleaned it up, just apply a primer and top coat without taking it back to bare metal first?
Thanks

Hi,
I believe HE stands for High Compression Engine. It just differentiates the the engine reference from the Commision number both of which for the Mk3 will start with a KE prefix.

Fascinating where topics can go!! But does anyone know if there's any folk still about (probably retired ?) who may be able to throw some light on what Triumph did with the first few cars off the line?

Hi,
The body shell is number 23 and the engine number 83. Gearbox and diff have been replaced. It wasn't despatched from the factory (or released into the sales stream to A G Boyles, Huddersfield) until December 1971.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the responses. Are there any folk still around from the 1970s who might know what the story may be? Heritage certificate confirms the dates etc.

Hi,
My GT6 was manufactured in October 1970 but not sold, taxed and insured etc. until 1972. How should I legitimately refer to it ? Should I say it's a1970 or a 1972 car, and, does it matter? I don't want to misrepresent it.
thanks,

Also try the Spitfire Graveyard.

Thanks to all, especially for the reinteration and extension on the care to be taken when when using "real" paint stripper - it always must be safety first. On reflection I think I'll be going with Nick's suggestion.

Nick,
I found that covering the underseal with a paint stripper (STRIP AWAY PRO) and leaving it for 20 minutes, working it in and then applying again if necessary depending on the thickness of the u/s worked well. Strip Away Pro is aggressive so you have take care - cover up, wear gloves, if it gets on skin rinse under water and protect eyes etc. and protect any part of the car you don't want to strip the paint off. Horrible really unpleasant job but satisfying when you get it done. You can get it from firms who specialise in supplying the "car refinishing trade".

Hi,
I've just spent a really 'wonderful' week or so ? removing bitumen underseal and the attached 'sound deadening felt' ?? felt from the entire underside of the bonnet and now have it back to bare metal and, of course, associated areas of rust all of which, fortuneately, are treatable. The reason I removed it was it looked awful and I want the bonnet underside to look 'smart' and also so I could see what the underseal was hiding. Leaving aside what I've found which will cost me to fix, I'm in a quandary as to what to now do with the bonnet underside. I'm leaning towards spraying it with stone chip and then over coating it with a colour to match the external colour. I'm not sure this is the best thing to do and would appreciate any views/opinions, product recommendations etc. from anyone out there who's had a similar challenge and come up with a solution. Also, if I do use stone chip paint would I use a conventional primer under it?
I'll be grateful for any advice, thanks,
Paul

Hi Ian,
I did check and they are identical to those on my early Mk3.

Hi Ian,
They look very similar (I won't say identical) to mine which I cleaned up and painted recently and I'll check tomorrow and then confirm.

Hi,
They look identical to mine (which I believe are original) which is an early GT6 MK 3.

Hi,
Is the inner wheel arch outer section (909351/2) welded at all to the front wing (909663/4)? I have one that is and one that isn't?.
Life's never dull with a Triumph.

Hi,
The web site Doug alluded to is triumphspitfire.com. According to it the Mk3 to number 4596 did not have the engine number prefixed with a 1. It does look as though all others did.

Door & Wing Mirrors, to have or not to have, that is the question????

Hi,
Don't think I'd go out on the road in this day and age without wing mirrors. Too much happens too quickly not to have the best all round vision possible. As for "with or without", I'd wait until the seats are in and adjusted for you and trial both (I guess someone will need to hold them for you) then make the call. Unless, of course, you want originally then it's easy.
