I've just removed the pads, makers name Brake Engineering, just down the road from me in Wrexham. Has anyone used their pads? PA202.
One caliper checked, seems ok.

Thank you all, I will keep you posted.

Rather than merely a case of not the best pads, I fear that "gradual loss of brake performance" over a trip of 200 miles (?), with the symptoms described, indicates a loss of mechanical efficiency in the brake system. Thorough inspection needed, starting with the state of the fluid, movement of the master cylinder, state of the flexy hoses and movement of the cylinders. I'll stick out my neck and say the last - are they both moving, in both calipers, no seizure?
Sorry, but just changing your pads in this situation is unlikely to improve matters.
John
Thanks John, It had occurred to me that there may be other issues, so I will be stripping the system down to ascertain the health of everything. The trip was 300 miles, so as you say, other issues.

I've never been really ok with the brakes since I completed the rebuild. It has only done short trips until the trek to Wales and those trips left braking to be desired. No servo, just want to sort it out before summer use. Handbrake is good. I'll be taking the current pads out to inspect them in the Spring.

When I drove my Midge up to Wales from Sussex last year, I experienced a gradual loss of brake performance, until I was having to virtually stand on the pedal to actually stop the car. It has type 14 calipers with unknown pads. There seems to be good pressure, as the pedal does not go to the floor. Could it be down to the pads? Would a set of Mintex 1144's be worth trying? I know they are expensive, but cheaper than a pair of calipers.
Any advice gratefully received!

Mum had a Ford Anglia 105E in canary yellow and white when I started driving in 1965, changed to a Herald 1200 estate later that year. She would let me loose on the local disused airfield while she took the dogs for a walk. Passed my test in 1966 and solo memories were in the Herald. I had two cars of my own when I started owning them, a 1956 Reliant Regent gown van and a 1959 Fiat 600 Transformable (sunshine roof).
Heralds, however, kept appearing on a regular basis (I've lost count..), and now I have my Herald pickup and JC Midge.
Mum's estate in a rather arty picture.. and a small selection including my Vitesse 1600 with daughters godfathers Dino.

I used Sussex Blast Cleaning ltd in Hailsham for all my pickup treatment, chassis and body sections. I got them to clean the body before l carried out all the repairs, I welded the chassis repairs and then had it blasted and primed by them in two pack epoxy. Discuss prices with them.

I seem to recall a drag race meeting at Blackbush back in the mid 70s where there was a mini clubman estate with a Jaguar 4.2 engine mounted behind the driver which drove the rather large back wheels. The original engine was still in the front.
Are you thinking of Stripteaser? That had Jag engine, but front mounted in a GRP Mini shell.

I should be identifiable with my one-off Herald pickup..and trailer.... Plus I will have an autojumble pitch. 75, grey hair and a 'tache. Probably not helpful!

Actually, next door...

That's the address for Wins and Co. Durkins Rd.

Waiting for reply from Wayne. Think I'm jumping the gun a bit...

How do I get tickets, with a view to participating in the autojumble?

Always a risk fitting a used box, seller removed it to fit o/d and was sure it was good. So far, so good! Seems to be worth the 7 hour round trip to collect it!

Replacement gearbox installed with standard length propshaft (with later, larger, flanges and new u/j's), First test drive today, all good. Great to be mobile again!

All answers taken on board. I have lots of other stuff, so may take a stand at Stoneleigh .and then think about disposing of unsold tat.

After purchase of a replacement gear box, I have a spare bell housing and Spitfire MK4 flywheel. Do I scrap them, or offer them to anyone? I've also got a couple of standard 13/60 propshafts, scrap also?

Marina and I presume Montego, share the same PCD as Heralds etc.

Part no13 is shown on the original w/s manual, not on the current suppliers diagrams... which don't show a washer under the nylon ball at all.
-
Another question? At the bottom of the gearlever, under the nylon ball, some manuals show a 'washer' part no.13. There is a recess in the lever and I found a rubber 'o' ring on one of my spare levers in this recess. Should this be correct, or should there be another steel washer as I found on another of my spare levers?

I'm going for a used late full synchro box. I'm not anticipating any long trips, so won't miss o/d. Anyway, I have a higher ratio diff, so no real problem.
I will have the D type o/d available for sale, I think the mainshaft is ok. Obviously it will come with all fittings.

Dont forget youll need a different mounting plate and rubber mounts for a non OD box however I think your speedo cable although longer will still do the job...
I've got all the necessary fittings, retained from when I changed to o/d..

True, but at least I should be able to get mobile.
