    That looks nasty!

If you decide have a professional rebuild of the gearbox, I can recommend someone in North Wales.... My brother, who has over 30 years experience, including Triumph 'boxes.

    Nigel

I could be very tempted, have you got his contact details?

  2. Following the loss of 2nd and 3rd gears on my trip up to North Wales from Sussex, earlier in the year, I have finally found time to pull the 'box and investigate.

Pictures speak louder than words.   Hopefully my box of a previously dismantled gearbox will supply the parts needed. Oh, and the output shaft main bearing had disintegrated as well...

Thanks PeteL. Currently I am sitting on the East side of a valley in Charmouth, gazing at the scenery all around in full sunshine. Walked to the beach earlier where recent falls prevent walking to the foot of Golden Cap at high tide.

We have been visiting here since the Millenium, but not for the last ten years. Much of it remains the same but the Pubs open for less time and here are fewer of them. I miss the 'Eldridge Pope' Beers.

Wifes family used to live in Charmouth.  We have walked above the cliffs to Golden Cap and back from Seatown along the beach.   We were younger then....

Ah, the fathom!  Deep Six and Mark Twain, all delineated on the sounding line by knots and feathers! And the tallow on the end of the sounding weight to bring up a sample from the bottom.  All as scientific as it comes in a pre-electric age!

Alas, all gone, with rods, poles, perches and chain distance measures, hands for horses and cubits for Arks.   But thank goodness for Metric! SO much simpler!

    Hands still used for horses...

Lovely material is copper. Finger plates on doors kill most bacteria and on operating tables. The green verdigri does not quite match natures colours though. The domes on the Herstmonceux telescopes hardly blend in.

One of my nephews used to work replacing astraturf at sport centres. He gave me the less worn parts for a shaded garden where nothing grew. Fit and forget. Just needs an outdoor vacuum cleaner. As with mowers, don't use it to pick up poo. (Thought it was a leaf). The smell never goes away it just stinks out the whole village. Worse than any farmer's muck spreader.

Ooo, bought back memories of a short spell working for Horsham District Council back in the early 80's.  Mowing recreation areas with a pedestrian Ransomes 36" rotary mower in the summer. Pre-poo bag era, so not a pleasant job....

Unguarded chains and minimal protection from the fan, probably not going to get approval from the works safety officer! Perhaps in those days people just used their common sense.

Its about old enough for a telegram from HRH!   My other grass cutter is half as old and just as hazardous, 1965 Hayter 24" motor scythe. Kick start kicked back and ruptured my Achilles tendon...

  7. I have a diff case from a 948 Herald that I broke for parts some years ago. It has a drain plug as well as the filler plug. I assume that it is not interchangeable with any later diffs, as I expect the later inner drive shaft bearings would be more substantial?

Anyway, before I take it to the tip, does anyone want it? Currently in Eastbourne, East Sussex, but moving to North Wales early May.

  8. A lot of people with canopy garage doors would love stainless cables for their lifting gear...  They are available now, a lot more expensive, but I would have offered them to my clients. (now retired)

I have the same type of cutters as Riubikey and can attest to their efficiency.  Several years of use and still working.

  9. I shall be heading to North Wales on Tuesday with the Herald pick-up and a trailer. Travelling cross country, so Swindon to Cirencester is on the route. Fingers are crossed!  Should I avoid the roadworks at Birdlip?

Oil is changed, MOT is passed and trunnions are oiled. A selection of tools will be taken, together with the most important part,  a charged up mobile phone..

Mileage for the trip according to Google is 263 miles. I haven't a clue what MPG to expect, but allowing for about £70 for fuel (E5)
