    Sorry, but just changing your pads in this situation is unlikely to improve matters.

    Thanks John,  It had occurred to me that there may be other issues, so I will be stripping the system down to ascertain the health of everything.  The trip was 300 miles, so as you say, other issues.

  2. I've never been really ok with the brakes since I completed the rebuild. It has only done short trips until the trek to Wales and those trips left braking to be desired. No servo, just want to sort it out before summer use.  Handbrake is good. I'll be taking the current pads out to inspect them in the Spring.

  3. When I drove my Midge up to Wales from Sussex last year, I experienced a gradual loss of brake performance, until I was having to virtually stand on the pedal to actually stop the car. It has type 14 calipers with unknown pads. There seems to be good pressure, as the pedal does not go to the floor. Could it be down to the pads? Would a set of Mintex 1144's be worth trying? I know they are expensive, but cheaper than a pair of calipers.

    Any advice gratefully received!

     

  4. Mum had a Ford Anglia 105E in canary yellow and white when I started driving in 1965,  changed to a Herald 1200 estate later that year. She would let me loose on the local disused airfield while she took the dogs for a walk.  Passed my test in 1966 and solo memories were in the Herald.  I had two cars of my own when I started owning them, a 1956 Reliant Regent gown van and a 1959 Fiat 600 Transformable (sunshine roof).

    Heralds, however, kept appearing on a regular basis (I've lost count..), and now I have my Herald pickup and JC Midge.

    Mum's estate in a rather arty picture..   and a small selection including my Vitesse 1600 with daughters godfathers Dino.

    Are you thinking of Stripteaser? That had Jag engine, but front mounted in a GRP Mini shell.

  6. Another question?   At the bottom of the gearlever, under the nylon ball, some manuals show a 'washer' part no.13. There is a recess in the lever and I found a rubber 'o' ring on one of my spare levers in this recess. Should this be correct, or should there be another steel washer as I found on another of my spare levers?

  7. I'm going for a used late full synchro box. I'm not anticipating any long trips, so won't miss o/d. Anyway, I have a higher ratio diff, so no real problem.

    I will have the D type o/d available for sale, I think the mainshaft is ok. Obviously it will come with all fittings.

Further investigation results in a difference between my spare layshaft cluster and the damaged one.  Different teeth, so not a straight swap.  The spare ones look well worn.  Now tempted to locate a used standard non-overdrive box... I still have standard prop shafts, so that's not a problem.
