  1. Ok, so 2 months have zapped past...  The Heep is mostly watertight and ready to live out for the winter.  I completed a twin tube roll over bar set-up which also has the 'B' post window sealing pillars tacked on. The cut down roof sits nicely on to the top of the roll hoops and is held down with over centre clips to the windscreen header surround and spring clips to the new metal on the roll hoops. Four clicks and it lifts off!  The load bed area is covered by a ply cover, edged with aluminium angle and held in place by 4 quarter turn spanner latches.

There is a temporary perspex screen sandwiched between the roof and the rear deck. It kept the rain out last night so I'm happy.

I took it to the East Sussex meet at Isfield last night. Poured with rain on the way over, but none in the car! Result!

However I must look at improving the headlights. Q/H items fitted, but definitely room for improvement.

Having had the oil guage pipe some adrift on my 2000 you find out it's happened pretty darn quickly, as the oil pressure light comes on almost right away.

Mine came off at the engine end which, while it resulted in hours of engine bay clean-up was probably better than comming off at the gauge end!

Way back in the day, I was part of a convoy of Moss kit cars returning from a jaunt to the Champagne region. My Midge decided to separate itself from the oil gauge pipe at the engine end whilst we were queuing at an autoroute toll station....  P**ing with rain, french motorist spotted the spreading pool of oil and warned me. I was able to effect a repair, topped up with oil and we all made haste for the ferry...  which we missed.

Idling only, so could have been much worse.   History turns a blind eye to any untoward results of an oil slick at a toll booth, in the dark, in the rain.....

  3. My pick-up project is a combination of various donor models.  The bulkhead is 948 and the doors are 13/60 and Vitesse. The roof section that I am using as a 'targa top' is unknown, may be 1200.

It is not a major issue in my case, but there appears to be a considerable difference between the tops of the quarterlight frames and the top of the bulkhead.

The doors fit well otherwise in the aperture with no deviation on the body side mouldings.

Is there a difference between the earlier 948 bulkhead around the top of the windscreen compared to the later models?

    Ignore the orange peel effect.....

and with any car thats stood unused  make sure that when you pull the choke the jet drops  SU / the flap closes solex/ , the valve operates CDS,

    the barrier  closes CD

depending on just what make carb you have .

just cause you pull the control  doesnt mean anything happens at the engine end

    Pete

I'll second that, my choke cable outer sleeve was stretching. Sleeve moving, cable wasn't fully.

  5. After the long period of unuse of my engine set up, I seem to have a drive problem. It is intermittent.

The set up is 1500 Spitfire engine driving through a D type overdrive box.

It first showed itself as a lack of drive when I put it into reverse at a local show. After taking it out of gear and then trying again, all was well. Since then I have noticed a slight slippage when giving it a bit of welly. The overdrive does not go cleanly in or out, rather it seems to think about it...  A trip to the shops this morning saw a repeat of the loss of drive when parking but only for a moment. It seems to go back to normal with a bit of a jerk.

Would a worn cone clutch in the O/D box give these symptoms?  In other words, if the cone clutch gives up, will I lose all drive?

I have got, returning to the garage, my Midge with the identical engine / O/D gear box. So the temptation is to swap it all over if the dodgy box needs a rebuild...

  6. I'm not a carburettor geek, but some years ago I was offered a SAH inlet manifold with twin Stromberg CD150's.  I believe that this was an option for the 1300 engine, but I don't know if that was the Spitfire or Herald.  Anyway, nothing venture, nothing gain, I fitted them to the 1500 Spitfire engine that was in my Herald estate at the time. (now in The Heep). I had no real running issues, apart from being a bit thirsty, but I've always wondered if different needles would be of benefit for the larger engine.

I pulled a needle this morning, 7B, which I cross referenced on the net to be the standard needle for the later 1600 Vitesse...  So, do I leave it all alone, knowing that my yearly mileage will be fairly minimal, or should I revert to a pair of standard SU's?

Either way, the Strombergs will have to come off for a service...  ( a rebuild kit from Burlen will be about £100 for the pair,  Used pairs of SU's  at least twice that on 'the bay')

     Decisions, decisions...

  7. Thanks for the link Richard, if I don't find something tomorrow I'll get on to them.   In the mean time, Iv'e cobbled something up to get me back there!

I really ought to revert to the correct SU set up, as the Strombergs have an unknown jet set up, probably for a 1300 (not the 1500 fitted). Still, it pulls like a train most of the time....

  8. I took 'The Heep' to my local Hellingly Festival of Transport yesterday and today.  The first few drops of precipitation today sent me home in short order... No roof...

It received a lot of favourable comments, even from diehard Triumph owners.

I have to sort out a decent throttle return spring arrangement for the twin Strombergs, as I managed to break it on the way home.  ( SAH manifold fitted). Anyway, tomorrow should be rain free, hopefully, and I can trawl the trade stands for a selection of springs.

There is also an annoying intermittent miss fire.   Something to do with the total lack of engine maintenance since I took the donor Estate off the road....  'If it ain't broke.... being my school of thought.   Ah well, oil pressure and temperature were fine, so I shall attend to carbs and timing.

There was a gorgeous Moggy estate two cars away...  A bit of a beast!

  9. A man arrived this morning, (despite e-mail stating that he would be attending in the afternoon....) Type 1 inspection, took lots of photos of things like engine number, commission number, front and rear with number plate, speedo with mileage, etc.  He reports back to his base and they then forward his report to DVLA.
