  1. Roger Just so you know I had a bit of a senior moment during this, I made the switch a long time ago and then left the pump/valve/tube in a box to come back to at a later (turns out much later) date. When I came back to it I couldn't work out what the rubber cap was for, I then thought it must fit on the pump body as it fitted quite nicely. You can see it in the photo of the fitted pump, its only now I realise its the rubber part of the switch I didn't need in the switch build. It sits quite well so I am going to leave it there it will at least stop me shorting a wire on the top of the pump...its sh!t getting old!!

  2. I started this little mod some time ago on another forum and only just got round to fitting it back into the car this week.

So my mechanical windscreen washer was buggered but I wanted to keep it original

So I cut the end off and scooped out the black gunk that 50 years ago used to be the piston… 413784512.jpg.d5b042583169e3b1ef6448748a109d3f.jpg

These are the components that I used to use to convert it to a powered system, the switch is push and release type, it’s only live while pressed413784511.jpg.b99f03ef4b1541b65a474e85c269887d.jpg

I needed to be careful as I don't want to see all this long spindle showing on the finished article…

I wanted it to look like this with just enough forward movement to activate the switch, but also I didn’t want to be able to pull it back, I want it fixed in this position with forward movement only

OK so I have got the new switch pretty much where I wanted it, with just enough movement in the shaft to press the button on the switch

Although the switch was quite tight in the housing I just put a dab of gorilla glue to make sure it stays in place, I also used some double sided tape on the switch button so the shaft cannot be pulled out and will stay in the position as shown below. I didn't use the rubber dome that came with the switch as it was just a bit too tight in the housing.

By fitting the locking ring the wrong way round and cutting the ridges off the switch body its a pretty much a perfect fit413787330.jpg.692c87bc5d5bb6107a64c71c5779a374.jpg
The double sided tape on the button wasn't strong enough to stop the knob from being pulled backwards so I used a small grub screw with a dab of glue through the side of the housing to prevent the spindle from being pulled back. Total cost including Lucas pump, switch and non return valve was about £16.

Fitted the pump just next to the water bottle and took power from ignition switch so washers only work while ignition on, new non-return valve in the water bottle and it works just great.

OK so its now finished, works really well, press the knob with just the lightest touch, let go and the spring in the switch automatically returns it to the off position. Just hold it in as long as you want water jet on windscreen.

  3. Back on topic you need to identify how it gets into the radio, power lead or aerial, pull out aerial and if interference is still there then a filter in the power supply close to the radio will help. If its gone then you have to fix it at source. Earthing is biggest problem so fit wide earthing braids for back of radio, the coil and aerial base or the  wing its mounted to, also make sure engine has good earth to chassis, and try a suppressor on coil and spark plugs. I might have some suppressors in the garage from my time in car audio business I will take a look and get back to you...

  4. OK so parts arrived today and I have a couple of questions if you would be so kind chaps...

    Huco pump, horizontal or vertical?

Do I need a relay to the power lead via battery or will it draw straight from the ignition switch, instructions poor and don't mention current draw?

Inertia switch, button up or facing forward?

Inertia switch in power circuit or earth wire?

    Appreciate any help guys.

  5. I am having problems getting fuel to carbs, I refurbished the mechanical fuel pump but it seems intermittent, first question is the glass top on the pump always meant to be full, that is to say over the top of the brass filter as mine seems to sit just below it most of the time...

If I fit an electric pump can I still put the fuel through the old mechanical one if I take the pump arm off, I say this because I like the visual to see that fuel is coming through plus I don't need to change the fuel line.

If I remove the pump is there a blanking plate available to cover the hole or do you have to make one?

    Thanks for any help...

  6. OK I have just Insured it with PJ Insurance with cover starting from today (you can't back date), my point being was the MID letter just a reminder to SORN or Insure the vehicle or will it mean I will recieve a fixed penalty fine, bearing in mind I had neither SORN or Insurance from 1st June when I first taxed it.

The letter states 'Act now to avoid a penalty' so is it a just a reminder letter or will enforcement be taken if I had neither at the time of taxing the car (June 18)

    Thanks for comments...

  7. Right looks like I messed up, keen to take advantage of the new MOT rules in May I taxed my car from 1st June. It wasn't on SORN because it had been off the road since the eighty's so it didn't need to be.

Today 23 Aug I got a letter fro MID informing me it was not insured, its not insured because its still in the garage where its been for the past 30 years, I was not aware it had to be Insured unless I was going to use it on the road.

So the letter states Insure it or SORN it, I can do either but will either of them invoke the fixed penalty fine? Can I Insure or SORN it back dated to June? If I Insure or SORN it from today will I still get a fine? The letter states act now to prevent a fine, but will I automatically get the fixed penalty once they realise it was uninsured/not SORN for three months.

    Anyone any experience of this?
