  1. It’s the alternator fan that’s clipped the hose, the clearance is only a couple of mm, I’m going to check nonmembers solution.
  2. This is my temporary solution or is this unnecessary
  3. Just working through the various bits and pieces and I was checking the hoses etc, the clearance between the alternator and the hose is minimal as attached photo - the hose has a small amount of damage where it had been clipped - any ideas / suggestions?

    Hub cap removal tool

thanks all, I think Ill be going the route clive suggested, I think I have some stainless steel wall ties that i can bend - that may be an ideal solution.
  5. Really silly question, what do you use to remove the chrome hub caps, just realised that there is nothing in my boot which would do the necessary if I had a puncture - there’s a jack, wheel brace etc. Is it a piece of bent wire wire a hooked end, a screwdriver, or a proper tool like https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F271973887946

    Brake Fluid

Thanks, I think Ive made my mind up from a quick search, it wont be silicone as Im not intending to rebuild / replace the brake system components at this stage. I found an invoice thats 3 years old and its stated as 'Castrol' brake fluid - Im assuming that this is not a silicone based product

    Brake Fluid

Well the fluid isn't a purple colour, its a brownish colour, no idea how old it is so want to replace so I know. I'm going to trawl through the bills I was given to see if that clarifies what fluids are in the car. Is it worth a change to silicone?
  8. I want to change the brake fluid in the vitesse, I dont know whether its currently on DOT4, DOT5 or silicone. I know I need to replace all of the fluid but Im assuming that the various brake fluid options are all compatible, how do I clean the system to prevent contamination?
  9. Well after a few hours cleaning up around the suspension it looks like the rubber bushes have seen better days, they’re ok for a while but could do with replacing, is it better to upgrade to poly bushes or stick to original, the arb link also looks like it’s seen better days, guess it’s down to the car being used after standing for a period. The track rod end rubber also looks like it needs replacing. As the suspension will all be apart I’m thinking it’s probably also a good idea to check the trunnions etc - is there anything else worth sorting whilst it’s apart? Would it be ok to use the car with just one side done? Or once I start do I need to keep it off the road until both sides done?

    Vitesse Mk1

That sounds about right, does it nake reference to him setting it on fire at some point - welding and waxoyl?
  11. John. I think you’re possibly right - more pressure than I’ve become accustomed to, never questioned the lack servo brakes on the spitfire, and in fairness the brakes feel fine on the vitesse, I only really thought about it as it’s on offer with rimmers.
  12. So would a swap to mintex 1144 pads be a good starting point before fitting a servo? I assume youre still on standard discs?
  13. Just noticed that rimmers have a servo on offer, is it an essential upgrade or a nice to have? I never bothered on the spitfire I had and never really found it an issue, however the gt6 I had did have a servo. Ive only had the car a couple of weeks and Im getting used to the brakes - theyre fine, just need a good old shove - so do I get used them or fir the servo?
  14. Thanks both, Ill have a search around.
  15. Anyone know how much hose comes in the club offer? Ive had a measure up, it all looks like 1/4" hose but I need 1.65m, (a metre would have been just ok apart from how the carbs are fed on my car) and I found 6 locations, so will also need 14 clips.

    Vitesse Mk1

it was in a mac reynolds monthly article - I think he was the register secretary. His name was Charles Roger Mortimore (but appears he used Roger) But to add to the confusion, I had the V5 back today and that states 4 previous owners so a little bit of a mystery to unravel - I do know at one point Anglian Triumphs sold the car (or sold it on behalf of the owner)
  17. Well a quick look following Daves pointers and I found 2 more lengths to what I was expecting, I’ll tot up what’s needed and speak to Angie tomorrow.
  18. just sorting out what I need to order from the club for the fuel pipes etc. There's a short length of rubber hose by the fuel pump, a length of hose that feeds to the carbs and then a length that feeds to the second carb (its running SUs and theyre linked with rubber fuel line). Am I likely to find a piece of rubber hose anywhere else?

    Vitesse Mk1

Unfortunately there is no date on the article, I used to have all the couriers but they where given away in a fit of decluttering after selling the cars. A dvd may be an option.
  20. When I purchased the car recently it came with a box file of receipts and old mots and tax disks. After sneezing my way through the box of dusty receipts we've worked out that the car has had 5 previous owners. It started life in Glasgow and slowly worked its way to Cornwall. The longest owner was a Mr C Mortimer who had the car from 1971 until 1997 - we have a copy of an article in the courier from when he owned the vehicle albeit it a very poor copy. Not sure we will be able to glean much more information but its nice to know where the car has been and the various owners from its first registration
  21. After a bit of a tour round, we have 4 garages that stock super unleaded. I’m trying the Morrison’s option first as that’s the easiest garage to get to that has a sensible price. I will see how the car runs on it and take it from there. Had 2 new tyres fitted today, out of interest what is the normal pressure for a 155/80 13? It was suggested 24 at the front and 22 at the rear - is this ok?
  22. Well just checked the article in the courier, the hose on the car is not to the required grade, shame really as it looks new, so now I need to work out where there’s rubber pipe on the fuel line. Looks like the February offer maybe a good option then!
  23. I was intending to use Tesco momentum if it’s at our local station or Morrison’s premium fuel. I wasn’t thinking about carrying a can of fuel, more along the lines of an additive to add if needs be. I hadn’t given ethanol a thought to be honest. My car maintenance skills are very rusty, I used to maintain a Spitfire and a GT6 up until about 10 years ago. Just need to get back into it! Checking the fuel lines is on the list of jobs to do, it’s SAE J30 R6 on the car. I also want to add a fuel filter as on previous triumphs I had issues with dirty fuel.
  24. been using the car and it need a top up of fuel, the previous owner recommended using the premium fuels either from a supermarket or a branded product, our local Morrison’s stocks a premium, I’m checking out various other outlets, however is it worth keeping a bottle of octane booster in the car in case I have to use normal unleaded.(I’m guessing the timing will need tweaking to run on standard fuel)

    Oil filter

ok daft question, is this the same thing but 2 number filters - if so Ill order. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Oil-Filters-0451103298-Bosch-GFE180-1109A3-1109A6-1026285-1070523-P3298-New/332113023192?hash=item4d537a90d8:g:qE0AAOSwH2VZ76ec:rk:2:pf:0
