Do you have a link to that forum?

What is a SPAL sucker fan?

The electric Spitfire runs a 96volt system so he runs his PTCs off of that. ...

Roger has kindly provided a link to the full thread - thank you Roger.

the Fan I used was a SPAL VA39-A101-45A - being 5.5” (140mm) in size it fitted nicely in the TR4 heater box.  It sucks (or pulls) the air rather than blowing (or pushing) - hence calling it a ‘sucker’

p.s. if you need any detailed info on the wiring options for variable speed then Roger is the man with the brains :)

  2. I think if mentioned before, my 4 has been used for my daily commute for over 7 years.

i was fine with the heat provided to the cabin, but the demister fan was pretty poor - I tried a 12v ceramic heater but to be completely frank it was useless (perhaps I had a bad one!)

When my heater matrix decided to leak I replaced it and while the heater was out of the car i fitted a SPAL sucker fan in the heater-box place of the original - I have found this to be a tremendous improvement - and at considerably less cost that fitting one of the Clayton heaters that Bob mentions above. I wrote-up the details in a thread on the TR Register forum, plenty of pics as well - plus some info on options for variable speed control of the fan motor.

The alternative heater valve was also worth adding.

  3. I have used Pertronix (Alton) Ignitor and the Simon BBC Powerspark on Herald, Stag and TR4..... all have worked well as ‘points replacement’ systems.

Yes, they can fail, but keeping points bits (or spare Powerspark they are so cheap) is an insurance.

i have now swapped out the Powerspark for a 123Ignition tune+ which I find to be very very good, significantly smoother and I have been able to tweak the advance curve (4a curve was my starting point before small changes) - it is, unfortunately, at the other end of the price-range but I’m happy.

Just tried downloading this form and received an error message. I've just send an email to the above.

You don’t mention what the error message was but the link that Doug has provided should work fine (the PDF opens for me)

You should also be able to access it (and other docs) from the ‘Club’ section of main website, this link should take you there:  https://www.tssc.org.uk/tssc/about.asp

I have a set of these guys, actually made up from two sets to get the full range, but they're great. They bite into the rusty nut so there's no slipping; of course the removed nut is usually then scrapped but they've been a great help over the years.

I have these, they are very good. When Sears was still around in the US I would browse the Craftsman section and always come out with something interesting from their wonderful range of ‘get me out of trouble’ tools.

  6. I found that the only time I had increased heat anxiety was when my 4 was sitting in a traffic jam or very slow-moving traffic for a while - obviously more of  concern during hot spells.

The std 4-blade fan was - in my view- never going to cope very well with my commute which would often involve stop-start slow moving traffic.

simplest way to address this was to fit an electric fan - I chose a SPAL with a Revotec variable controller mounted in a boss in the water return pipe, with a manual override switch. All wired from an auxiliary fuse box so as not to add extra load to the existing loom.

this works really nicely, fan rarely operates with normal driving, and comes on/off when in traffic exactly as I expected without any overheating worries.

Personally, it has worked out well for my needs.

  7. Difficult to look past Classic Oils Heritage mineral 20/50 - clearly states the Zinc (as ZDDP) content on the label and all at a fair price.

    Thanks. We are in Cranleigh

You could speak to CSC at the Macleod Garage (near the Cricket Club) or Rivett Autos to see if they could help - no personal experience of either.

if you are prepared to travel to Aldershot I’m sure that Rees Brothers would be able to help.

Thank you everyone for your replies but I believe that i have found the cause. I noticed that the stay bar securing the radiator was not securely fastened and after tightening up the nut/bolt. the noise disappeared. Result cost free fix.

Good stuff, a great example of looking for the simple fix rather than over-thinking, well done :)

  10. If your fuel gauge is also reading high then the culprit is very likely to be a faulty voltage stabiliser.

i think the gtr108 is listed for the Spitfire, but could have changed over the years of production as gauges altered, of previous owners have altered what is available.

May be worth trying both temp senders - they are only £6/7 - and see which provides the most reasonable output.

  11. The arches are a warning sign - there is likely to be more elsewhere once opened up.

the drivers door looks to have some warning signs of a rusty skin - but the panel gas ( as mentioned above) look ok. Under the bonnet looks generally unloved, as does the interior, but would probably clean up ok.

Paul at Stag Classics in Alton has a good reputation, so that is a positive for the engine work - the Clive Tate ZF auto conversion is very desirable, it could have been done by Clive, Favershams, EJ Ward or Paul at Stag Classics as they will all do the work. It is approx £4K to have one of them do the job.

the anoraks will point out that the pinstripes are upside down, the rear wing badges are pointing the wrong way and possibly missing a pair of cover sills.

the prices for these have changed so much since I sold mine (isn’t that always the way :) ) so I wouldn’t suggest a value - I would recommend taking a closer look at the rusty areas I mentioned earlier.

I'm quite tempted to sit on my hands for another week, see how much this one sells for at auction and then take it from there, as a few much more promising looking cars have come onto my radar after a few months of pretty much nothing at all.

Super..... glad you are having more success, enjoy the search :)

Thanks Andy, I'll get in touch later - do you have a link to what you saw beforehand? Checking the MOT history reveals nothing since 2018 which is an awfully long time for a car in regular use.

No, I don’t have any other links, the owner wouldn’t be the first person to align to the revised MoT testing for Historic vehicles - as mentioned, a conversation with the owner is probably the most effective way to proceed.

Any ideas on the '3' theme?

I did read some info on it a while ago - but don’t remember the detail. I believe the owner is from the United States and probably a link to pool - doesn’t take much to change the gear knob, not sure if the roof is paint or decal - I’d speak to the owner if i were you.
