Well, the liquidator will be smiling  -and possibly the bank and hmrc, but I doubt the general unsecured creditors will get a look in - they don’t usually.....!!

    Bob

it will depend on the amounts owed from this sorry tale...... but, yes, HMRC will always be first in the queue

Well all I can say is wow!

There is certainly no shortage of money amongst the Triumph community.

The priCes were way beyond my means.

£62k for the TR5, plus £24k buyers premium and VAT. £86k and it is not even complete!

    Unbeleivable.

I understand that The VAT on this (and some other lots) was only due on the buyers premium itself, not on the final bid,  so total was less at a little over £73k..... still - in my view - a crazy price!

(the administrator, and therefore the creditors, will be smiling)

    Hi Andy,

the TR SDF do not monitor or react to quality. They support the cars when there is no alternative.

For quality issues there is another system in place.

    Hi Roger,

thanks, yes, I was aware that the quality question was not monitored by the TR Spares Devlopment Fund - my comment was simply a general observation that the desire for decent quality parts transcends all models/marques :)

Yes, as Andy says, the TR SDF is a totally independent entity. To a great extent it always has been, as it had its own funds and own management. Its link with the Register was that it was set up by Register members and to begin with only Register members could support it by putting money in. In those early days, there was some benefit in terms of discounted parts, but that situation didn't continue. For many years now, parts that have been produced with TR SDF funding have been available to all at the same prices. As time went on, the ethos of the organisation became very much about helping the entire TR community, which is one of the reasons why when the fund reopens any TR owner who wishes to contribute can do so. Many people over the years have misunderstood what the fund is about, as contributors do not get discount parts or special favours by being a part of it. In fact, there's often no obvious, direct benefit at all. What contributors do get is a sense of doing something for the common good of the TR community.

    Best wishes,

    Darren

    Hi Darren,

thanks for adding some of the additional colour - just helps folk appreciate the big-picture :)

  5. Good of Darren to highlight the TR Spares Development Fund, the site gives a good insight into some of the positive work that has been done, probably worth highlighting that it is (I understand) now a separate entity from the TR Register itself although their history is intertwined.

The quality of parts is a common theme across all classic marques, most suppliers will want to hear if they have provided something which is not fit for purpose, but you do also hear of some organisations who tend to turn a deaf ear when it comes to low-value items which - perhaps understandably from a business perspective - are felt to be consumable items, the rate of consumptions just being faster these days!

SOCTFL has worked well within the Stag world for a considerable time and managed to retain its connection to the SOC, it actually covers both availability and quality - if it has the tick you have confidence in the product and the fund would have provided the grant (or is it a loan?) to ensure critical items remain available to owners.

All variations of that fundamental principle to provide decent stuff to keep our wheels turning :)

I don't think there would ever be a cheap good Stag engine, the 2 words just don't go together.

A quality rebuild Is going to be about £3k I would have thought.

Yep..... that’s about right - sometimes a touch more.

    ..... Andy

  7. An off-the-shelf rebuilt, or good running engine, is going to dent your wallet. Depending on what is wrong with  your current one it could also be an expensive rebuild of your own unit.

You may have more luck on the SOC forum or Facebook pages to put feelers out - but you’ll be waiting a while for a bargain.

hope you find something, good ones are wonderful motors.

Lovely, but for that sort of money I'd want the steering wheel on the correct side... :)

I think I’d want it made of solid gold as well :)

that said, it does look lovely

These look very similar to the ones I bought from “ C-J Autos” based in Heywood in Lancashire.( See website -they sell all sorts of car access equipment)

Yep - mine are CJ Autos variety - i think they have a newer variant which has a scissor-action, that allows it to be a little shorter, raises a couple of inches higher and doesn't 'arc' while it raises. The other plus-point is they have 4 lock-off positions, mine only locks at the max-lift position - i had not seen any of these available second-hand (yet) and they are a bit pricey to buy new.

  10. I have a pair of the hydraulic ramps, the advantage being that when in the ‘down’ position they have a very shallow approach.  If you have something incredibly low there are lead-on ramps available as well.

mine came from eBay for not much money and included the lead-on ramps (not that I have ever actually used them!)

  11. Postcode is the biggest variable - so be careful when simply looking at two numbers from people in reply to your question. That said, I would strongly recommend you speak with Peter James, they are usually very competitive and, being a club panel member, make the agreed value part simple.

the phone is still your friend to make sure you are comparing apples with apples.

  12. Not sure what model you have, but all will (unless removed and not replace during past bodywork) have a commission plate which includes the identifier for the type of car, it’s body colour and trim colour.

Rimmer Bros have a good summary of Triumph models and paint code numbers/names here:

    https://rimmerbros.com/content--name-Triumph-Paint-Chart

if not painted an original colour (or very faded) you can ask a paint/body shop to scan the paint to try and get a good match.

    Thanks all.

I see Footman James advertise in The Courier...Is this associated with Peter James or just coincidence.

    Phil.

I am almost certain that Peter James (as an individual) was a senior member of the Footman James Company many a moon ago. He then chose to leave and set up his own company which is Peter James the current TSSC insurance panel member

  14. Hi All,

thought this might be helpful for people who have been suffering from the common gear-lever rattle as I have been with my TR4.

i had refitted, then replaced, the anti-rattle spring at the foot of the lever but it didn’t make any difference. I found some old references to using some rubber tubing (5/8” ID heater hose) under the spring retainer, which I tried and it improved things in top only.

My last try (which has worked) was to use a length of thin-walled tubing from the lowest part of the lever through the spring retainer which is eventually concealed by the gaiter.

Clear tube was a couple of quid off eBay, 16mm internal diameter, 19mm external diameter - hopefully the pictures below will describe it better than words.
