There's >12v on the live feed and the earth does go to ground so definitely a gauge problem. Are they repairable, is it worth me opening it up, if so what am I looking for? I have never taken one apart, but two things can go wrong: 1. the resistor 2. coil windings within the instrument; basically a break in a strand. With point 1, probably a case of replacing, if at all possible. If the copper coil winding is snapped, then it is a case of re-joining, but to be honest these wires are so thin it's probably a complete rewind. dougbgt6 Posted December 24, 2015 Report Share Posted December 24, 2015 I bought a second hand Smith's voltmeter off Ebay, it didn't work so I took it apart. The coil windings were broken, no way they could be soldered or reconnected. I was going to return it but, to add insult to injury, my hand brushed the dial and the decals came off on my finger. I binned it. You might be lucky, it might just be a break in the wiring too the coil, but if it is the coil, good night Vienna! The club shop sell them at a good price.
