Fergusminto
Can someone please advise - can these wishbone arms be replaced in situ or are they under the tension of the spring?
Colin Lindsay
You'll need to remove the front spring and shocker assemblies anyway as the bolts for the top wishbones are pushed through the turret from the inside out, and have to be slid inwards to remove them, so unless the spring etc is out of the way there's nowhere for them to go. No other way!
johny
The good news is that the spring tension is contained by the integral damper so once the front wheels are off the ground everything can be undone no problem...
Fergusminto
Ah! In that respect my spring compressors go back to the 1970s pos for an Imp or Escort. They (two hooked rods) do not fit the Spit. Can you recommend a suitable one? Many thanks.
johny
are you going to dismantle the spring-damper unit then?
Fergusminto
Not if I don’t have to Johny but I can see pos problems with removal of the spring-side bolts and getting them back in again. I hadn’t thought of that aspect that Colin mentioned. These wishbone arms are very corroded so I should replace them. I had to renew the springs last year and those spring compressors I have made the job extremely difficult. I will have buy a new tool.
johny
Dismantling the spring-damper assembly isnt something you should need to do very often and fortunately isnt necessary to change your corroded wishbone arms👍

Fergusminto
Having looked at the top bolts attaching the wishbones I think the spring will have to come out as there is not enough space to withdraw the bolt - the nut is on the outside, not the inside. If the nut was on the inside that would be possible but not in this case.

Graham C
Thank you, you have answered my question as well. It that I tidying up the chassis and wanted to drop the wishbone, vertical link, etc without stripping the components down. Graham

It works the other way too; if you fit the spring assembly first you cannot later fit the wishbones. Guess how I know.
