Surely the short square nut in the fork is weaker than a long threaded joiner

I agree Peter. The clevis nut threads ( about 3 or 4) are taking the strain. I screwed the adaptor onto the cable end to the halfway point of it's internal thread, then screwed the extra 1/4 unf stud into the remaining length and lock-nutted- so each threaded join was about 12mm, which I think is plenty strong enough. I can still adjust the length by screwing/ unscrewing the clevis fork and then lock nutting it's posn.

I'm just finishing a full body off resto of my mk3 gt6 and had a struggle threading the cable through with the body off!!! now some time later (nearly finished) thought better adjust the cable up only to find its to bleeding long!! all the cables are the same length vit/herald/gt6 etc aren't they??? If i need to change the cable I'm going to cut the retaining plate as previously suggested...
