Ignition timing

it will still work all you are doing is checking that the lift on 7 and 8 is identical when 1 is at top dead centre on compression, there are many ways to achieve the same result. I would actually close the valve gap to zero and then put a dial gauge on both and make sure lift is identical that way and I used 7/8 when the manual uses 1/2 but it does not matter you either measure 7 and 8 with piston 1 at tdc compression or 1/2 with piston 4 at TDC on compression

to get a rough idea just watch valves 1 and 2, turn the crank until no 4 piston is approaching TDC with both valve closed (compression stroke) at that point 1 and 2 should have the same amount of lift the inlet will be opening and the exhaust closing but at TDC lift should be equal

yes heres the procedure simplified:

Turn the engine (always clockwise) until pushrod/rocker 8 is at highest point. Set rocker 1 to clearance 1mm. Repeat this using 7 at high point and adjust 2 to clearance 1mm.                                                                        Now turn the engine until its at TDC mark on the pulley and then the clearance on 1 and 2 should be the same as each other (the size doesnt matter but both should be the same).                                                                                  If this isnt right turn the engine exactly 360º to TDC again and measure - there may be a small difference but it shouldnt be a lot.

When finished reset the clearances of 7 and 8 to the correct sizes👍

When finished reset the clearances of 1 and 2 to the correct sizes, right?
